Red face Solved: Lost sound after Vista reinstall
Due a corrupt registry file I did a reinstall of Vista Home Premium that fixed the 80073570 error problem OK but now the sound has gone.

I have done all the usual stuff like checking the connections, trying the speakers on another PC, making sure that Mute has not been selected and trying to test the sounds under the hardware setup etc. but no luck so far!

Under device manager, the Sounds, Video & Game Controllers shows my devices as:

High Definition Audio Device
USB Audio Device

Both of these are "working properly".

Also searched the Knowledge Base and came up with a known fix being KB937077 but I already have that update installed anyway..............

I have done the "update driver" routine but am I missing the actual sound card here?

The above two devices don't appear to me to be an actual sound card. I slipped in the installation Motherboard CD to see if anything was there but nothing that was obvious.

Also tried uninstalling/reinstalling them both but still not getting very far on this one!

Wonder why a simple reinstall would cause this hangup?

Hey fellow Aussie!

Wat i would do is to grab the details of the driver, and uninstall the driver through your device manager. Then restart your computer and reinstall the driver. If this doesnt work then id try and manually look for the drivers (new or not) from a third party site andrepeat step one.

Hope it works

What I have learnt is that a reinstall of Vista Home Premium comes with some unexpected problems!

The first being that it completely wiped out my SoundMax audio card drivers and reinstalled a generic Microsoft Audio System. I said in my post above this was a bit sus and after digging out the Motherboard Installation CD and finding the audio driver, reinstalled it again and all is well!

Dear oh Dear, why does Gatesy do that to us!!

Don't blame the OS as that would happen in any version of Windows unless the board mfgr has drivers in the OS or it's service packs.

Yeh, guess Rich-M is right - easy to blame the OS but I did check with the dealer who put my new PC together for me and he said that Vista had the newest Soundmax Audio card in it's drivers and the Motherboard CD was not used to install same.

I emailed Soundmax.com (who have a brilliant support system) with the specs of my system and they also confirmed that Vista OS had the drivers in place for this particular card.

This is not an uncommon problem as the following link confirms:

Never mind, all fixed now so what is dun is dun!
