Question What is KbdStub.EXE?
and do I need it? It is always 'sitting' in my start up and says it can't be classified....is it something I can remove/delete?

Look like some kind of keyboard software for your HP computer:

I think kdbStub.EXE is infecting my computer.
Can I discard it without risk?

bobbynet is right
unfortunately this is a malicious piece of software if it's on vista most likely.

If you check the service specifics in software explorer in vista, it claims to be located somewhere it wasn't (for me C:\HP\...), and the publisher certificate would be OK if it were actually HP product.

It is clearly camouflaging itself as innocuous HP software while it EATS YOUR COMPUTER ALIVE.

I can't be sure it does all that much damage, but if i'm right about it being malicious --> something of this nature is going to spell very bad things... eventually
