Unhappy 80 gig of HD gone...
Hi I have a major problem, I just bought an Acer Aspire 5920, and I love linux, so I try to partition my single C drive, just as that is happening Vista freezes up.

I leave it on overnight and see it is still frozen so I try to reboot it.

Now I boot it up and my C drive is missing the 80 gig I was partitioning into a seperate drive and can only hold 72 gig.

I already tried looking at the default partitioning tool to see if it was listed as unallocated which it is not, I reinstalled Vista from a CD and it is still like that.

So I'm at a loss of what I should do.

Thanks in advance.

Let's see a screen shot of Disk Management for the drive.

Start, Run, diskmgmt.msc

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to TSG, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Here you go, weird isn't it?

I noticed I made a mistake it is 74 gig, sorry about that.

I refreshed and rescanned multiple times and that is how it looked

I'm confused, what do you think you should see here? What is the make/model of the hard disk installed in the machine? What is the capacity you expect to see here?

Looks like that comes with a 200 gb hard drive. What size partition were you trying to make for Linux (Windows will not see it), it could actually be there.

I was trying to make an half of the original C drive partition for linux, I am unsure if the make model, nor how to check, but it was originally 160 gig, not 200, I know it was 160, it even has a sticker on it stating that.

I just don't get how 80 gig would just disapear like this, strangest thing ever =\

Looks like the partition table got changed to reflect the extra partition, but the job wasn't finished.

You might be able to use a partition table repair utility, but I'd have a COMPLETE backup before I did anything.

Thanks in advance

I see lots of "partition repair" utilities on a Google scan, but I have no experience with any of them. Personally, I'd use Acronis True Image to create a backup of the existing volume and reformat the entire disk.

Well it is totally unworking due to me erasing part of the Vista partition only with the table, I can't even reinstall ANY OS, at another forum I got this response...

How hard is that???
I'll try that I guess lol
