could someone tell me the best virus protection for vista that uses the least ammount of resources.Also is there a way to uninstall windows defender and if i did what should i get to replace?

you can uninstall through Windows control panel "add & remove programs" but when you uninstall programs, they sometimes leave Registry values behind. so it's wise to download a registry cleaner that will clean up their tracks. Here's two free ones you can download:

regarding to the best Virus protection program, you can download a free edition from AVG's web site, but if you do web surfing quite a lot, it's a good investment to get AVG's internet security software, worth the money, and it is not a memory hog like some other ones do

thanx for the help thats my biggest concern not to worried on the cost i just dont want a resource hog.

I used Avast! anti-virus on my older systems, which did not have much memory to begin with, and it worked very well. With Vista I don't know, haven't tried it yet.

On my XP laptop I used a combo of Zonealarm free firewall, Avast! anti- virus, and SpyBot S&D, along with Adblock.

I have been thinking about the same question though. My Laptop came with Norton, and it will run free for 90 days, but after it expires I will be looking for some new security programs as well.

If u dont want windows defender dont delete it just turn it off by going to control panel-security.
and i think the best virus protection for vista would be Windows Live Onecare, Norton 360 and TrendoMicro Virus Protection 2007(but u have pay for the softwares)

I highly recommend Nod32 Anti-Virus. It is an extremely effective AV solution and this program takes an incredibly low amount of system resources. Right now, it's only taking 2,780 k of memory and 0% of my CPU. Avast is also a good AV program but Nod32 takes even less system resources that that AV. The only catch is that you have to pay for the program, but you can try it out for 30 days in a free trial. Also, I don't recommend getting AVG, it's not nearly as good an AV program that you can get free when compared to Avira Anti-Virus or Avast Anti-Virus.

DO NOT install Mcafee or Norton. Mcafee has terrible virus detection and Norton is a giant resource hog.

I second the NOD32 suggestion. If you don't mind paying for antivirus NOD32 is the way to go.
