Solved: Front audio jack not working
I recently got a new computer with Vista Home Premium x64, and it is working great except that my front audio jack is not working properly. I wasn't the one who assembled the computer, but I know it is connected correctly because when I right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar and select playback devices>headphones>properties>enhancements and click "preview" it plays out of the front audio jack perfectly. However, it does not work with any of my applications.

Is there some setting I have to change to switch from between the speakers and headphones in Vista? Is this likely a driver issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Full specs are listed above.

Have a look at Device Manager/Sound-Video-Game Controller.

Right click items shown, then check for –Enable, update driver or roll back.
Also check - Other devices, if listed.

Not quite sure of your total system connection set-up?? Have you two audio outputs?
Speakers - rear connection, headphones - front connection.

Utilising both outputs may disengage or mute one of jack sockets.

Thanks for the help. This is the first time I've had a computer with a front audio jack and I thought it would just automatically play out of this jack once I plugged in my headphones. However, it seems I have to manually disable the speakers in the playback devices window I mentioned in the original post before it will play out of the front audio jack. This is easier than reaching behind the computer to unplug my speakers and plug in the headphones like I had to do with my old computer, but I wonder if their is an easier way to switch between the two jacks or simply make the computer play out of both at the same time?

Well, I think I figured out the best way to switch between the two devices by fiddling around with different settings. I enabled both audio jacks, but set the front jack as the default audio jack. Now when my headphones are plugged in it plays through the front audio jack, but when I unplug them it switches back to the rear audio jack. Thanks for the reply prm, it really helped get me on the right track.
