Loss of System Restore
Went to create a restore point before installing some software. I noticed that there was a message that no previous restore points had been created. This should not have been the case as I have both created manual points and automatic ones have also been created. I then went to create a restore point and after a few seconds got the message that the restore point could not be created. "Windows cannot create a shadow copy due to internal error in other system components"

The event log shows an ASR Error: Failed to collect critical information for ASR backup. Reason: Unable to obtain disk information for device 0 (Win32 error code 0x15). I also get "Volume Shadow Copy Service warning:ASR writer error 0x80070015.

Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: ASR writer Error 0x80070015. hr = 0x00000000.

Operation:
OnIdentify event
Gathering Writer Data

Context:
Execution Context: ASR Writer
Writer Class Id: {be000cbe-11fe-4426-9c58-531aa6355fc4}
Writer Name: ASR Writer
Writer Instance ID: {c65c51f4-84e7-48a5-981f-022645e4f1a9}

System protection is turned ON for disc C (the only HDD although I have a RAID 1 array)

Vista home Premium.

Any ideas?

Just as an addendum:

Have found this:

but neither scenario fixes the problem so far....

We are talking about "system restore" right -- not "full backup and restore" which normally requires a separate disk, partition or backup media?

Have you tried running chkdsk on the drive?

Many issues with "XP"s System Restore get resolved by disabling it, rebooting and re-enabling it. That wipes out all previous restore points -- but also fixes issues with corrupt catalogs and caches.

If all else fails I would try that also with Vista:

Thanks Rog

I had tried the off / reboot / on trick and it did not work. However I found that there was an apparent driver error with a USB device. I was following the first option on the blog in my second post. That referred to a SCSI device so I assumed that since I had none (other than the SCSI emulator used for RAID) it would not apply. Basically that scenario proved to be correct except the drive was a USB external drive. For some reason, unlike most (all?) USB drives it appeared to require a separate driver. Nothing suitable was on the disk, within Vista or on the MAxtor web site. Since the driver was not installed, even though I could access the drive in windpws explorer and read - write ok, disk management listed the drive as bad. Now it was disk 1, not disk 0 as per the error message. Nevertheless when I removed the driver, System Restore worked fine.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I'm not aware of any USB drives requiring separate driver installations either.

However any USB controller or device listed in the Device Manager can be removed and normally Windows will redetect it and reinstall drivers for it; these are just default system drivers.

If the drive itself is bad -- you might try formatting it.

Whatever the situation, glad you got it resolved. You can mark the thread "Solved" using the Thread Tools menu here.
