BSOD 4105 - Business
Hi there. I keep getting the following message. Anyone have an idea what is causing it, and what to fix it? I tried downloading memtest86, but it won't run because this is a 64 bit installation of Vista Business.

Also, please note that I have 4 sticks of 2gb ram on an ASUS p5b deluxe motherboard.

This is an "NTFS" "file system" error >>

http://aumha.org/a/stop.php#0x24

The first thing I'd do is run chkdsk on the drive.

The second is to see if this "BSOD" occurs booting in either Safe Mode or a "Clean Boot" configuration >>

First, restart in Safe Mode (tap the f8 key promptly on startup and choose the Safe Mode option from the boot menu).

In Safe Mode –

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

>>> PS: you don't need "memtest86" on Vista -- it has it's own memory checker.

Run mdsched.exe

That didn't seem to narrow anything down. Now I am getting a real BSOD with no dialog box when I restart. This time I can't really see anything as it goes too quickly.

All I saw was IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Is there any way to determine what this type of thing is? I just reinstalled the drivers for the 8800GTS (freshly downloaded from the Nvidia site).

What else can I do, this is extremely frustrating.

Did you run chkdsk?

Have you tried doing a System Restore to a date prior to the problem? Have you ever backed up the drive using the backup and restore option (this is different than "system restore" by the way.

Have you looked in c:\windows\minidump for those files and uploaded them?

If you want to halt on the Blue Screen, run sysdm.cpl

And select Advanced > Startup and Recovery and take the check out of "automatically restart".

Make sure "write an event to the system log" is checked; choose "small memory dump"

and the location should be:

%systemroot%\Minidump

Hi Dog.

I ran a session of windows with all of the services off, and it still crashed. This leads me to believe it is not a service. I ran chkdsk, and it displayed nothing. I disabled System Restore as soon as I installed windows, as it tends to hog disk space.

I can definitely look into the minidump folder for some files to upload. Let me get back to you with those files once I can get on the PC to check.
