Wireless connect prob, IP address conflict but not true.
Ok, I will not rant on Vista, but... I repetitively get IP address conflict message when re-connecting to saved wireless network profiles.

To solve these problems I have re-configured the wireless router(s) for a totally new lan address, tried the pc with both DHCP then Static address, always deleting the previous connection entry, and always on reconnect I get a message of IP address conflict, even though this is the ONLY computer on the network.

It seems once I connect to any wireless network, disconnect then re-boot the pc it will seldom ever connect again.

the machine is a Dell Laptop inspiration, Vista (shi*) Business

Thanks for any help, this is my last try before having vista stripped off and going to XP or Linux.

Thanks,

Thank you for your time and help!
Bellsouth, US
Modem is westell 6100 series in bridged mode
Router, Sonicwall TZ150W VPN
set to WPA and DHCP 802b/g mixed
Dell Inspiration E1705
I do have this problem elsewhere connecting to other wireless routers. The wireless connections have always been quite flakey and many routers my Dell/Vista is not able to connect to, it just times out or I get an IP Conflict, are the two that come to mind.

Thanks again for your help.

Let's see this from the computer in question.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Ok, I have the wireless card, dell 1390, set up static with the following settings hard coded, and IPv6 is disabled in all connections.
-my manual configuration entries-
IP address 192.168.219.20
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.219.1

ipconfig info, other network connections are disabled so I am just going to type in the ipconfig for wireless, all others show "media disconnected"

Connection-specific DNS suffix..... :
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address... :169.254.128.16 <---- here is the problem!
Subnet Mask ............................ :255.255.0.0 <--- screwed up
Default Gateway ....................... : 192.168.219.1 <---- correct

I have repaired and repaired the connection, so where the he** is Vista getting the 169. address from!

Thanks again for your help.

I actually want to see ALL of the IPCONFIG, especially the part that comes before the data you edited out.

You can try this repair too.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Wow thanks for the great tips John, I will try these once I get home from work. The netconfig info that I posted is all that was displayed, all else said "media disconnected". Also I noticed my firewall is stopping the Laptop's login attempts as "IP Spoof Attack" because of the alien IP. There are ways around this but I would be sacrificing some security.

Will post my results later, Scott
