Help with opening xp files in vista
Am nothing close to knowing much about computors but saw this site and hopefully someone can help...Just got a new laptop with windows vista, my old one shortcircuited apparantly so all my files from that computor (which had windows xp) were transferred to a usb 2.0 storage system (hope that makes sense to everyone else), however, those files will not transfer whilst I am using vista it seems, I was told it was because they were from the windows xp system....Any idea how I can get them onto vista??? Sorry for the ramblings, hope this makes sense:s

I use USB drives on BOTH my XP and Vista machines. I have NO problem reading any files from any of the devices.

Tell us more about this "shortcircuited" system.
What you mean by "shortcircuited"?
What type of USB device are you using?

Thankyou for the reply Well I took it to a computer shop as my old laptop wouldn't even turn on,the verdict was that it had shortcircuited and there was nothing else they could do to fix it (which I have since been told by others that that's a load of rubbish) but I decided to get a new laptop anyway. In the meantime they put the files from the old comp onto a usb storage sytem, heres all the info I have for it: usb 2.0 interface, data transfer rate up to 480mbps, plug and play, supports windows 98/SE/Me/2000/XP, SUPPORTS MAC os 8.6 or later. When they gave me it they did say it can only work on windows xp but I don't understand why there should be a problem with it working in vista. It doesn't connect directly, the lead that comes with it has one usb connection on one end but two usb connections on the other. Sorry for sounding so vague but I'm very much not a computer whizz!lol. If you need anymore info i'll try my best, or if you can help that would be great again, sorry for the ramblings!

Look at the two connectors, one is data and the other is for extra power. All that is needed is to use the "DATA + Power" connector which is blue in color on mine. The other is Green in color and is marked Power only.

What are the markings on the two plugs on the one end of the cable?

It may be a permissions error where you may have to boot into Safe Mode as Administarter and allow the files to be shared, or change the properties from "read only" to "archive" so they can be changed.
