Vista network file copy slow
Hi
i am trying to copy from XP home laptop to Vista Desktop.
The the copy is real slow almost 200KB/s same as my internet download speed(sometimes my interenet speed is faster than n/w copy).
Copy operaion on same drive on desktop is real fast almost 20MB/s
i read lot of posts about it & tried following thing
1)installed hot fix KB931770
2)Disabled Remote differential compression feature
3)tried stopping ip helper & Computer browser service
4)tried disabling firewall & anivirus program
5)auto updated the windows vista from MS site

i dont know what to do now. i have already wasted lot of money & time figuring this thing out
any help is appreciated. otherwise i have to uninstall & install some different OS
is there any way i can return the windows vista & get my money back?

Thanks,
Vinod

What are you trying to copy over?

I have copied from system to system many times, Yes, it is slower than XP but not much. There is the new security and the AV on the Vista machine checking the files.

Also do not try and copy to much at one time!

Thanks DaveA for ur reply!
i am trying to copy some media files(mp3 & JPG ). i have tried multiple size copy 5GB,1GB 500MB, 50MB at a time. but in all cases the copy is slow. Y'day again tried re-instaling the KB931770. its just frustrating to get work simple n/w copy .
ohh i should have listen to my friends to wait for SP1, SP2....
How come company like M$ get such horrible OS release out of there door without doing basic QA.
Well i think i will uninstall the Vista & install XP or linux.
Please ask your friends & loved ones not to buy Vista untill SP10

Thanks for all ur help guys . .

Most of the issues are NOT Vista but hardware related. Some OME just have NOT updated the hardware and/or drivrs to meet the requirements of Vista.
M$ not to blame on most the the issues I see here in this Forums.

After almost a year of using Vista Ultimate, I have to disagree with Dave.
In my case, all hardware is new and vista compatable. The issues I am having are common with many Vista users. I can connect to my wired network without any issues other then being slow. As soon as I go wireless its a crap shoot.
I gave up using wireless for network file copying. Just doesnt work.
14 MB is the biggest file I have been able to transfer.
Currenty trying to move a 350 MB file
After 1 hour it is still trying to calculate time remaining.
Nothing has moved, yet I can at this point go online and get a 2 mb/sec speed.
Unfortunately, my wireless is as stable as one legged drunken sailor in a North Atlantic gale. It quits without warning. Apparently this is a common Vista issue that hopefully will be addressed in SP1.
Update: as I type my wireless network is transferring my 350 mb file at a whopping 50 kB/sec. It is also telling me it will take 54 minutes.
I also experience extremely slow speeds transferring to usb connected storage devise.
To deny there are connectivity issues, among others, in Vista is doing a disservice to your readers if not being downright dishonest.

RE update, transfer of 350 MB file over wireless has now stalled.

Vista is absolute garbage. I have SP1 and all the updates it constantly asks me for, which obviously require a reboot. To copy a 500M file from an XP, Vista or Linux machine takes about 50 mins over a dedicated network. Between ay of the other machines it takes 5 mins.

I don't think it's Vista, I just copied a 580MB file from my XP PC to my Vista SP1 PC in under a minute, the transfer rate was about 10MB/sec
