You know it's not in sleep mode because it freezes with the screen lit?

i think i've found a solution.
your most recent windows updates might be at fault.

but one in particular since removing has improved my pc.. even when its not in a cool area
it doesnt heat up as badly. and also the freezing/hanging has gone away.
and also i can leave it up all night and come back and its fine.

its call CAPICOM or something like that.
look for it in your windows updates and remove it.
your pc should work fine afterwards

HP Laptop - NVIDIA driver problem
I also had problems with Vista freezing up on a laptop. The problem for me seemed to be a NVIDIA driver update that came through Windows Update. If you go to the NVIDIA website, it will tell you that HP uses a modified driver. The one that came through Windows was probably not this special version. What seems to have worked for me was downloading the NVIDIA driver from the HP site. Then, don't allow Windows Update to force any NVIDIA drivers onto your computer.

Well, I ended up having so many problems with the computer that I sent it back in for the second time for repair and they ended up replacing the mother board. Ever since it's been working great <knock on wood>.

However, now the battery just went totally dead. Can't be used at all. They are sending me a replacement as it's still under warranty. But I've only had the computer for 6 months and have had all these problems. I'm not happy with this HP laptop at all.

We've also got a Toshiba Satellite laptop and have had it for over a year with no problems whatsoever. I'd never get another HP
