Unhappy HP Laptop with Vista Freezing Up
I recently purchased an HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop. It of course came installed with Vista.

Ever since I purchased it, I've been having a problem where the computer intermittantly freezes up when left setting for periods of time. This can be anywhere from a couple of hours to overnite.

It doesn't do it all the time, but generally happens at least once a day.

When it happens, I have to use the on/off switch and turn the computer totally off and restart the computer.

I also have a Toshiba with XP installed and have had none of these problems with that laptop.

Would this be a Vista problem or an HP problem

Anyone else had this problem with their HP laptop and is there anyway to fix it? I don't even want to begin going to HP tech support, so thought I'd come here first

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this!

Could be going into Hibernation or sleep. Check the settings and turn them OFF unless you feel that you must use these features.

I meant to add, I've shut down all the power saving options and it still does it.

I think it is a HP issue and would give them a call.

That's what I was afraid of .... i hate "talking" to technical support. They just know how to stick to their little script and really are generally clueless about anything that is out of the norm

Have you checked the bios for power management settings as perhaps there is a conflict to the settings in Windows. Also I would check what is running in startup (msconfig) and leave nothing but essential antivirus and antispyware. I have seen Norton or MacAfee come up and cause this on several HP Laptops until I uninstalled every last bit of it.

Do you think it could have something to do with the laptop becoming overheated? I been leaving it sitting on a footstool and maybe the bottom is getting too hot? Would that cause it to freeze up?

I did change the startup settings, so just the basics are running - in fact it loads and starts up a lot faster now :-) I uninstalled McAfee and have not had Norton. I use AVG antivirus and Zonealarm firewall.

I'm not sure how to check the bios for the power management settings you were talking about. How would I go about doing that?

Good point. Download and install www.superantispyware.com update it and run a system scan. You can use it free or purchased.
As for bios I was thinking power management should say "user define" or "enabled".
