Opening .ZIP files as compressed folder after changing association
Hello

I've inadvertantly associated .zip files with Word 2007. Unfortunately, I cannot find any way to clear that association so that the files will be opened as compressed folders.

Does anyone know a way I can change this back?

Thank you

I had a fix for you, but it was a zip file .

Copy the text between the lines and paste it in a blank Notepad window.

Save the file to your desktop with the name "zip.reg" (It will have an icon of small blue-green blocks, if successful). Right-click the reg file and Merge it with your registry.

Interesting Fix
The good news It goes right into the registry and seems to merge cleanly.

The bad news It doesn't seem to have made a difference. The .zip files still try to open with Office.

I restarted after making the change, but still can't get Vista to treat the .zip files as compressed folders.

Would it help if I used regedit to remove the entries in the OpenWithList for .zip files?

Remove the zip entry under HKCR and then scroll down and remove the "CompressedFolder" entry.

Then use the reg file to put it all back (hopefully minus any Office references).

If that doesn't work, then we may have to start looking at Office itself and any monitoring programs running in the background that may grab that file association.

Hi. I got it.

Actually, what I changed was in theHKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Fil eExts\.zip key. I removed all the entries in the OpenWithList subkey. When I restarted the machine, Explorer showed the .zip files as compressed folders again.

Your fix helped both by providing a valuable reset and by (perhaps unintentionally) giving me the idea to reset the OpenWithList.

Anyway, so far so good. Thanks for your excellent help. I appreciate it very much

Regards
BB

Question Help!!!!
I'm having the same problem...I used to be able to open zip files no problem, but the other day I tried to open one with Internet Explorer...yeah, THAT was a mistake. It goes crazy trying to start up an Explorer Window...I don't know, it's really weird. Anyways, now whenever I try to open a zip file it tries to open through Interent Explorer! I'm really not that great with computers, so I couldn't understand the solution you gave. Could you give it to me in lamens terms please? Thank you!!!

Try this File Association Fix. It's chief use is to remove a current file association so that a new one can be made. Use the program to remove the current association and then try the fix above.

Need more detail than that or more help? Just ask.

Open with->Browse->browse to /windows directory and select explorer.exe

Voila! Everythings back and working perfectly.

Damn, I was stupid enough to select Internet Explorer myself and did I swear! haha, I even went so far as to rename the iexplore.exe and while I was working on that that opening and closing thingy came to an end and saluted me with a message reading "bla-bla... too long," IIRC.

Okay, I'm feeling really dumb right now...but I can't find the windows directory thing? lol. I've tried searching for it, and I'm starting to get the feeling that it's not a file or a program. So yeah...help?

No problem. Just type the following string in the opened dialog window:

%windir%\explorer.exe

and hit enter and everything's supposed to be working just fine.

Also, the windows directory can usually be found at c:\windows

Help~?
Kay, so, I did something similar to the other two who posted here, except instead of changing it to Office or Explorer, I changed the folder to Windows Media Player by accident and I don't know how to change it back.

I have zero experience with computers, so, all the coding I saw above doesn't really make any sense to me and I don't know what to do. Help? :3

(My laptop runs on Vista, by the way.)

Try post #2 above. If that doesn't work, start a new thread about your problem. You can make a link to this one if you want, but no one is going to notice your thread tacked onto the end of someone else's old one.
