Laptop Hangs when I adjust Sound Volume
Hello,
I am running windows Vista on an Acer Aspire 9300 Laptop.
Since about 2 days I cant adjust my sound volume, because it freezes up when i do.
I can only press CTRL+ALT+DEL and press Start Task Manager, then it returns to Windows, starts up task manager but i cant click on anything, also the Windows button does work, exept i cant click anything in it.

I searched all over google, mircosoft and several other Support sites but no answer found.
tho i did find a similiar problem to mine:
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread82691.html

I am running windows Vista, Not XP

I hope you can help me,

Greetz,

Milan.

If Explorer is freezing only when you alter your volume, I would advise downloading & installing the latest audio drivers from the Realtek site - http://www.realtek.com.tw - the drivers you need are the High-Definition Audio codecs. This should resolve your issue.

Its not just Explorer that is freezing, its everthing, Mozilla firefox, MSN messenger, all programs i am running.
installing the new drivers didnt help, problem still persists.
The strange thing is that, When i alter the volume on the keys of my Notebook stand(external keyboard) it DOES work, but when i click on the icon in the system tray, it hangs, or when i use the FN key + Arrow Up, which should make the sound louder, it also freezes,

Thanks for the reply, I hope someone can help me,

Greetz,

Milan

Edit: I scanned twice for virusses and spy/malmware, it cant be that.

Did you get an answer to the question...
Am facing exactly the same problem, have tried everything, including re-installing every damn drivers, but to no avail..
I am having a HP pavilion notebook, and running XP Windows media center

Would appreciate any help in this direction..

Jumping on the bandwagon with the same problem. I just purchased my new Pavilion dv2000 yesterday, and this is the only glitch I've run across so far. For me it's the opposite: the taskbar volume slider words perfectly, but whenever I try to use the touch-slider above the keyboard the computer hangs up. Really am curious for an answer, especially since this seems to be a multi-platform issue. If I do end up calling tech support I'll post what answer I get.

With mine at least it hangs. The semi-transparent volume indicator opens up in the middle of the screen like usual, but every time it goes to fade away after a few seconds like normal, it "twitches" and reappears. While it's doing this whatever program was in the background goes black and stops responding. The only solution I've found is to open up task manager and close all programs that are running.

AH-HA! I've found a solution!

Credit to laptops-drivers.com, as found through a carefully-worded google search. The article says it's meant to fix HP Pavilion laptops, so I can't ensure its effectiveness on other platforms. The problem sounds about the same though, so it may be worth a shot. Pretty easy too.

"Here are some steps to solve this volume problem:
a. Go to search and choose “run” option
b. type msconfig
c. you have to locate Quick Touch On Screen Display
d. Please uncheck this Quick Touch On Screen Display Option
e. Click OK
Your problem will be solved after you restart it."
