Conflict in network between Vista and XP
I replaced my XP computer that was attached to a DLink router in my home network for a Vista computer. Now this computer doesn't see any of the other computers and the others don't see the Vista one.
Any idea how to set this up correctly???? Help please!!!

Network name
I did not asign a name to the network on the Vista computer. It associated itself with the DLink router and automatically showed up with it's own name. It is different to the "MSHome" name that the network originally had. How do I change the name in Vista for that network? You think that it may be the problem???

Please do this for each machine.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

nbtstat -n

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Vista PC can't see XP PCs on the network
I have now the same workgroup name in all the computers. The XP computers see the Vista machine but they say there is a network path issue that won't let them connect to access the Vista machine for any reason . File, printing and all the sharings are on in the Vista machine. The Vista machine can't see the XP's in the network at all.
Any ideas?

Can you ping the XP machine by name from the Vista machine? How about that info I asked for previously?

Same Issue
I am actually having this exact issue, though I am just setting up my home network.

I have a desktop with XP and a new laptop on a wireless connection with Vista. I tried to ping each machine from the other and they found the address, but timed out on all attempts. The internet connection is shared through both and file/printer sharing turned on much like the example here.

Following I have pasted the information you requested from this user...

How do you get to maintain the RUN window open to see what the ipconfig/all info is? My window in Vista closes immediately as soon as it opens!!!

Halfway Fixed...
I fixed the Vista to XP problem...

On my desktop I am running ZoneAlarm & I had to add the IP address of the Vista machine so that I could view files on the desktop...

Still working on getting the reverse setup. I think it may have something to do with McAfee that came pre-installed.

Figured the work-around for McAfee - still working on the printer issue though...

If anyone can help me figure out why I can share files but not my printer (printer is on XP machine) I would really appreciate the help.

FYI: To share files I had to add the IP address of each machine to the other firewall as a trusted site.

What are the exact symptoms of not being able to share the printer?
