Unhappy revdmike
Greetings,
I am fairly new to computers and a first time visitor here.
My problems are: the update says it cannot search for updates(error code: C0150004), and secondly, system restore goes through the motions of restoring, but when restarting, tells me it did not work due to an unexpected error.
I suspect this may be solved by a restore from the discs supplied, but I'd rather not go down that route if possible.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike.

For system restore, you may have a corrupt system restore database, so I suggest you clear it out so that furture restores will work.

As for updates, can you access the internet and the microsoft sites ok?
Check out http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527 for more help on updates.

Many thanks pjhutch, I'll try the restore suggestion.
Secondly, yes, I can access the update site, but altough it downloads, it does not install.
Thanks,
Mike

Does it say anything in the Event Viewer?
How much disk space do you have?
Is TEMP or TMP environment variables set to a valid folder?
Have you run Disk Cleaner to clear out old temp files?

You can install updates manually by downloading the update .exe files from MS if you know the KB article number:

Hello again pjhutch.
Checking the event viewer, shows 704 errors and 1520 warnings. The refs are mostly 4375, 4385, 8194, and seem to refer to update attempts, although one warned of a possible hardware fault. I cannot find this one again. I would add that I have had a new hard-disk fitted under warranty.
On the updates, I have downloaded kb938194 & 938979, both of which show as "failed".

Sounds like the Windows Update files are corrupt or missing. Try these fixes:
