Yep, that's already in the registry. I've also tried installing from different ports. I think I'm going to try reformatting my computer once again.

Well, to be candid, I don't know what else to suggest except perhaps running "sfc".

I haven't done this on a Vista machine, but evidently the option is still present:

You computer spec's state that you have a "Alienware m9700" which at the OEM website says it comes with Vista, why are you installing a "Retail" version?
http://www.alienware.com/product_det...EFAULT#pdp-nav
You did state to a question of mine that you are using a retail version.

I'm running sfc now. If that fixes it, then that'll be amazing. =P

m9700s come with Vista now, but I got mine last year, before Vista was out. So mine comes with the OEM version of XP.

Have you downloaded the Alienware Vista drivers and software for this machine?
Until you do , I think you are going to continue to have driver issues.

If this machine came with XP it may have USB 1 type hardware and Vista requires USB type 2.

Yes, I have installed every single one of them. I have been using Vista since it came out with no problems on this laptop. I recently installed a faulty graphics card driver (doh) that made my computer unbootable, so I had to reformat and install Vista again. This is when the driver problems began.

I was just trolling through the Event Viewer on Vista (run: eventvwr.msc) and came across a category I had not payed any attention to before.

It seems to contain information on device driver installs.

Have a gander and see if there are any "errors" there and what they say.

You can copy/paste some of them here.

The location is Microsoft > Windows > DriverFrameworks-UserMode > Operational.

That's weird... it didn't even log anything about my trying to install new devices recently. The only things listed there are from a month ago.

Well that's very weird.

Are there any recent entries at all in the log for the "Task Category" = "Loading drivers to configure a newly discovered device"?

or:

"Creation of a new driver host process"?

>> in services.msc is the Plug and Play service on Automatic and started?

Nope, all of the entries with those categories are from a month ago.

I checked services.msc and it says Plug and Play is started and on automatic.

Great find -- I've never seen a reference to that particular file before.
