Backup and Restore Problem
I tried to backup my files onto a DVD. It got so far then said the backup failed. I tried again and it says it failed. I really didn't know what I was doing. I keep getting an error message that says "you are running out of disk space on drive d" which is the restore drive. I must have backed up the files to the wrong place so now that drive is full. What should I do? I'm using the backup program that came with my Vista Basic and I have an Emachine. How can I delete the files I backed up to the drive D so the message will stop showing up every few seconds. It says delete files then goes to a box that only has the recycle bin showing but nothing is in the recycle bin. Thanks. Linda

There should only be one backup file on the D drive.

Can you post a screen shot of the file and folder listing of the D drive shown when you Windows Explorer opened at the D drive?
With this screen shot we may be able to tell you which one(s) are backup related.

You should not be trying to backup onto the recovery partition, that's part of the issue.

Leave the recovery file and remove the other file and the LINDA folder.

Your DVD is drive E:, which is part of the problem.

In order for the recovery partition not to appear in My Computer and cause further issues, you can go to Disk Management (Start, Run, diskmgmt.msc) and remove the drive letter for the recovery partition, (currently D. This won't affect the contents of the partition, just keep it from appearing.

Thank you very much. I guess I didn't see the dropdown box and backed it up to the recovery instead of the dvd. You use Vista. Don't you?
Did you make backup disks to use if you have to reformat the drive? That is what I was trying to do. Thanks. Linda

I also use Acronis True Image and an external USB hard disk. I find CD/DVD to be slow and a PITA.

Thanks, guys, I'm glad there are smart guys like you. I have had my Vista for a few months. I always used Windows 98 SE before. I like Vista after I got used to it but I know next to nothing about it. Thanks again. Ali

Your computer was shipped with a recovery partition .. and you probably did not get any Recovery DVDs.
You are expected to burn you own recovery DVDs .. (it's in the fine print somewhere)
If you haven't done this ... and didn't get any recovery DVDs ... Do it NOW.

Your recovery Partition will be no good if the HD crashes.

Ditto ... on Acronis True Image and an External HD.

Good point on the recovery disks, I second that recommendation.

Better yet, I buy them from the OEM, cause I have had several of the "Home Brewed" ones fail.
It has been worth the extra $20 to get them.

I usually try to test my recovery DVDs on a spare HD.
Then if they fail .. HP owes me new ones on Warranty ... For Free.

Had a friend just complain to HP ... Her recoveries didn't work and it wasn't her fault.
With the proper assertive complaining ... She got them free.

And it doesn't pay to be a Cheap Skate and buy low quality DVDs.
Last I heard .. HP wants $35

She still refuses to let me backup her computer with Acronis .... But she's a Blond.
