Cool Resolution Problem w/ HP a6152n
O/S Vista Home Premium / HP Pavilion A6152n (Core2Quad) / ViewSonic VX2235wm 22"

Unable to set computer to native resolution of monitor, 1680 x 1050. (16 resolutions available, just not 1680 x 1050. None are 16:10 resolutions)

Computer and Monitor are new (less than 1 mo since purchase). Have downloaded and installed latest Monitor Drivers (dtd 8/22/07) and newer Display Adapter driver for Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset (ver 7.14.10.1277, dtd 5/17/07).

HP (sales) says computer is capable of 1680 x 1050 but tech support is unable to accomplish after over 10 sessions. HP sells monitors running 1680 x 1050. Tech support always starts by uninstalling/downloading/installing drivers for monitor and display adapters always with same result (define insanity). HP has suggested I purchase a new video card and power supply but can't guarantee that will work.

Any suggestions on how to get 1680 x 1050 available?

Welcome to the TSG forum.

Have you checked with Viewsonic to see if they have the appropriate drivers ??
I thought all monitors came with the drivers they need ... at least their native resolution.

No other answers yet ???

Unless someone knows a trick I haven’t found ..
Seems to me like HP is caught between a rock and a hard place .. (The video supplied and Vista) ....
And you have two choices.

(1) I don’t understand the craze for wide screen monitors.
They are wider but you see less in height so the viewing area is less, and less centralized.
Most everything you’ll be displaying is a 4:3 ratio anyway, and all computers will support a variety of 4:3 display sizes.

The only monitor I could find that is a native 4:3 ratio is the Samsung 204B.

Is it too late to take your Viewsonic back ??

(2) I see you only have integrated video … have a spare PCIE slot and could add a video card.
Before you add a video card, check your power supply rating.
You should have a 350 watt PS installed in your HP.

I’m currently running one of these video cards, because I hate unreliable and noisy video card fans.
Already lost one fan on the OEM video card HP installed.

It seems to work ok on my OEM 350w Supply, But I do have a 450watter I could install.
This should also improve your Vista’s performance score.

If I had a wide screen monitor … I’d run it at my 1280x800 setting.
Any higher settings would result in a display too small for me to see comfortably.

Better yet …
With this video (or others) you can run two monitors (any size) and play with all the Windows you want.

Hope this helps a little.

Hello jhue, I was wondering if you found a solution to the resolution issue. I too have a hp a6152n with a 1680 x 1050 native display and was having the same issues. This morning I tried to adjust it one more time and the option was there for 1680 x 1050. It worked great (makes a huge difference) for about 2 hours and then it jumped back to ugly for some reason. It appears the display adapter will do it, it just seems to be a little flaky.

jhue and GSFulton...
I'm having the EXACT same problem as you guys...disappearing resolution options. I own an HP a6152n computer with an Intel G33/G31 Express Chipset and a 20" widescreen monitor (mine is an LG Flatron L206WTQ-BF) with a native resolution of 1680 x 1050. For some maddening reason, I got the correct resolution offerings when I first installed the monitor drivers...but now they've mysteriously disappeared, forcing me to run the monitor at a lesser resolution which is noticeably crappy by comparison. I've been trying to figure this thing out all day. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers...to no avail. It's highly annoying.

I've got nothing to offer, info-wise. I hope someone comes up with something soon. Might just be stuck with the option of buying a new video card, unfortunately...

Haunted machine
Well, I started it up this morning and it's back to 1680 X 1050 all by itself. We'll see if it stays. I've installed XP Pro over vista on this machine and it's working fine otherwise. I'll reply if I see any solutions.

Boy, annoying is right. Start up this morning and it's back to ugly. Anybody find any answers? Gotta find a solution or put a new video card in.

Part of the problem
I think I may have discovered one of the problems. I have a Viewsonic VX2235wm 22" display and find that it is actually 16X10 instead of the usual 16X9. It looks like all of the resolutions available for the G33 video adapter are 16X9. I'm guessing that might be why it looks so crappy (unless it decides to cooperate for a few hours, then it looks awesome). I might try powerstrip or something like that.
