windows vista and antivirus
help I have tried to download install AVG FREE antivirus twice to no avail I am on aol.vr dial
up takes a good few hours to download but keeps coming up error message. So gave up on avg and tried to download and install avast antivirus and got the same error message. Both claim to be compatailbe with windows vista so cant see where there is a problem getting these antivirus files to install. Do you know of any good antivirus programs compatable with vista ? Can anyone help please ?

AvgFree and Avast are both compatible with Vista 32 and 64 bit. The download problem has nothing to do with compatibility. See if you can grab it from here:

As stated, i doubt it's a compatability problem. You may be getting a corrupted download due to the long download times.

Try using a free download manager; here is one of many. Google search for others but be careful what you install... "spyware"!

Honestly, you are better off getting/buying a Real Anti Virus Program.

I know tons of people swear on AVG, but I can tell you from experience, and the number of systems that come across my bench, that AVG is not that great. It constantly misses viruses almost everyone else detects, when it does detect, a lot of them it can not clean or even quarantine.

Don't get Norton (ok but resource hog) or Mcafee (your better off with AVG).

NOD32 (very good) , but Avira always gets the highest rating but produces a lot of false positives on

http://www.av-comparatives.org/

If you look at the On-Demand scans, everyone ranks high.
But you look at the Retrospectives and AVG is always ranked among the lowest.

You must read everything on this site to understand that AVG is exactly what you pay for something for nothing. Free is not always good.

Did you REMOVE (Uninstall) any AV program that was (is) on your machine before trying this?
Having a AV program installed while trying to install another will NOT work most of the time.

Hi all
Is this windows defender thing something that counts as an AV that must be removed? is is removable?? I have had so much frustration with vista in the last 2 weeks i am about ready to throw my new laptop out the window (no pun intended), but that is a story for another thread...
