I have an HP with vista. For the past week or 2 I get the blue screen indicating problem with windows.

I have rebooted and sometmes dont have the issue again until my next startup on a different day.

Please advise. I have attached a minidump that I sw recently in another post.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, you have created "shortcut" to a minidump file on your computer -- rather than posted the actual file. We cannot access this.

Please follow these directions exactly:

I can run a debugging utility on the dump files if you do this:

1 > create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like
2 > navigate to %systemroot%\minidump and copy the last few minidump files to that folder.%systemroot% is normally c:\windows. They are numbered by date. You can paste that address in address bar to get there.
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.
4 > use the "manage attachments" in the "advanced" reply window to upload that zip file here as an attachment.

This might point us to a 3rd party driver causing the error, if one exists for it.

Since almost all bugchecks can be caused by faulty ram, I would recommend you perform memory tests.

now my microsoft office 2003 freezes and locks up. Word, excel, outlook etc. All freezes up and doesnt work.

That minidump was for july 2 (note the date in the file number: Mini070207-01.dmp])

Are there any more recent?

Do you have any System Restore dates that precede these problems?

Run: rstrui.exe or access it through the Start Menu.

Also, post a HijackThis scanlog:

When did that error occur, running Hijackthis?

You haven't answered about system restore points.

There are no obvious issues there, and it can be hard to troubleshoot intermittant ones.

You might try disabling the Windows Aero function to conserve resources. This is done through the Control Panel > Performance and Information Tools > Visual Effects > uncheck "enable desktop composition". You can try other performance tweaks there as well.

You may have a 3rd party application causing the problem.

You can run msconfig and use the startup tab to experiment there.

One I would disable for now is "ring central buzzme":

Finally you have both Symantec and AVG installed. That is a no-no. Choose one. For best performance you should choose AVG. For best protection you will have to live with Symantec which is a resource hog and could be a cause of the bsods.

More minidumps are needed there.

I took off symantec, and now my microsoft office is functioning. However I turned comp on today and I giot a black screen indicating

"BIOS ROM CHECKSUM ERROR"

Found CDROM try to bott from it...Fail

Insert system disk press enter.


I turned comp off and then on and it was ok. But my computer icons, and IE and also the overall appearance seem different.

Any ideas?

BIOS ROM checksum error means that the CMOS/BIOS programming has become corrupt in some way. I don't know why it would affect your icons unless you rebooted using a different screen resolution.

Right click on the desktop and select Properties > Settings and see what your Screen Resolution is. Typical settings are 800x600 and 1024x768

Probably the most direct approach to resolving the 'checksum' error is to reset the CMOS.

There are two ways to do this.

One is to remove the CMOS battery for a couple of minutes to allow the CMOS to completely discharge. If the computer is more than 5 years old -- you may well need a new one.

Another is to locate the 3 prong set of jumpers usually near the CMOS battery and move the cap over to short the two jumpers for a few seconds, then move it back.
