Vista backup problems
hello, I am a tech support person in the residence hall where i live. I recently encountered a problem neither I or any of my co-workers could figure out. This person's computer is set up to back up her files once a week using vista's backup utility. However, the last few times it has attempted to back up to the HP Back up drive: D, the backup utility has failed saying there is not enough space on the drive. The drive is supposed to be 8.2 GB and from "My Computer" it is saying that 7.9 of that is currently being used. However, when i explore the drive there is no more than a few kb worth of files in it. I have changed the folder options to view hidden files and folders also. In an attempt to fix the problem, i deleted everything in the drive. Even after that it still is saying that like 7GB are being used. Please help!

Are you using a CD or DVD to backup the files on?

On my Vista computer, D:\ drive is my DVD RW drive. There wouldn't be any backup/storage space there.

Are you sure D:\ drive isn't her recovery partition?

you should not be messing with the recovery partition. Have you made dvd's or cd copies of the recovery partition? Try reading the info about recovery and backup that came with the computer.that should be under Help & Support. You may as well order the recovery discs from HP because the way you're going you are sure to need them soon.
It seems to me that you and your Tech Support friends must be studying for a job at HP tech support

Don't worry, this computer is only 1 week old and I only deleted the previous backup folders.

Add an external drive. Vista is 15 gb in size and there is no way you are going to back it up in 8 gb and get very far anyway.

I have the same problem
I too have unsuccessfully attempted a backup on a HP running Vista (HP support says that the cd/dvd burning aspect of their program and Vista are incompatible) and ended up with my D: recovery partition nearly full. I would like to go in there and delete those misplaced backup files but I am unable to view them even after changing the folder view to "show hidden files and folders." I cannot view anything at all in D, all that appears is an icon called RECOVERY and when I click on it I get a message that I shouldn't alter files in there (even though I can't even see any files). Can anybody suggest how I can view and delete those extraneous files? I really don't want to do a sytem recovery. Thanks so much!
