Second monitor not detected by Vista
Hello,

I just did a clean install of Vista Business Edition on my IBM Thinkpad T42. Before today, I was running Windows XP SP2. I had a dual display with my second monitor connected to the VGA port on my Thinkpad. However, since installing Vista, I am unable to get a dual display. When I go to the Control Panel > Display options, the window that usually shows a diagram of both monitors side by side with a large "1" and "2" is only showing one monitor. It seems the second monitor isn't even being detected.

The external monitor (a Dell) is definitely connected and in working condition; when I unplug it in the screen changes to the "Self Test Feature Check".

Any ideas on what this could be? Is there any information I could give that would be useful in diagnosing this?

Thanks!

Rex

You did reinstall the IBM video adapter drivers (from IBM, for Vits and assuming that they actually support it) after the clean Vista install?

Without them the laptop will not have the correct video drivers (Windows only supplies basic drivers), it would not be unusual to have the second display unavailable.

Hello kiwiguy,

Thanks for your helpful reply. I just went to the Lenovo website to install any drivers that I thought might make a difference. I installed the following, with no success:

Quote:
1. Video driver (ATI Radeon, FireGL Series) for Windows 2000/XP - ThinkPad A31, A31p, R40, R40e, R50, R50p, R51 (1829, 1830, 1831, 1836), T30, T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, X31, X32
2. Common Microsoft Windows XP update module (Q910728) - ThinkPad 2007-09-12
3. Monitor File for Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP - ThinkPad General 2004-10-25
Am I looking in the wrong place? Are there any other drivers I might want to install? My official computer model code for finding these drivers, by the way, is 2373-H12.

Really, thanks so much for your help.

Rex

I do NOT see VISTA listed in your posted list.
You need VISTA drivers NOT XP or 98, 2K and etc.

Hi DaveA,

Unfortunately, those were the only drivers I found. There were no Vista drivers in the "Display/Monitor" or "Video" categories. Any idea for my next step?

If there are no drivers, then that T42 model is not fully Vista compatible.

You need 128 MB (minimum) of graphics RAM, the specs from Google for your T42 suggest you do not have that and laptop graphics are usually non-upgradeable
