Can I install Vista Home Premium on a 25 GB partition?
Hi,

Right now, I have XP installed on a 25 GB NTFS partition and then a few other NTFS partitions totaling at over 600 GB for data, programs and games (and a 70 GB ext3 partition for Ubuntu.)

Anyway, I want to install Vista Home Premium on the partition I now have XP on but I read that you need 40 GB disk space for Vista. I want to know if it would be alright to install Vista on the 25 GB partition or if you really need 40 GB disk space for just the OS.

The installation process for Vista needs 40GB of space on the partition, so I doubt the partition size you have will work.

Vista Ultimate there is no chance because it uses this huge installation thing. Basic and Premium you might get away with. I would reccomend thought that you make a 50 GB (little extra doesn't hurt) for the installation. then when vista is on your computer you can just shrink the partition to what you want.

If you have over 600 gigs to use, why make such a small partition for the operating system.

Bob is right and you can install Vista to 25 gb as it takes up about 15, but it probably won't run right as it starts to build up and require more space.

But if you compress your HDD it should save you a bit more space.

Again, with 600 gigs of space, why bother.

And of course compression reduces performance.
