System account access
Hey I am new to vista and I am especially not used to a home edition of windows(came with comp) and so I am being really annoyed with this new operating system. Windows vista is not letting me acces the administration I the paying customer deserve. I mean we buy windows and then we have to hack the os just to do what we really want with it. Thats bs. but anyways I am wondering if Anybody knows how I can gain access to the system account on windows or how to elevate my admin account. I know how in xp pro but I can't elevate myself in vista home basic. I wish to access my group policies and secure my other user accounts. but unfortunatly GP is the only service it doesn't let me run or change access to. I already tried going through my computer management console and even created a new console with my services etc in it but I can't access it nor can i apply the proper snap-in. I have tried the old gpedit.msc but it can't be found and I tried disabling it with msiconfig but it wont disable. I figured if I could disable gp temporarily I could access it but I can't. So if any knows how please let me know asap.

Vista Home Basic isn't going to support any policies or other advanced configuration. That's the point of Basic.

but its still there
But they are still in the OS. The service is there and I know that I can access it if I can enter the system account. I just need to know how to access the system account or how to remove all my admin accounts so i can boot to it in safemode.

There is no gpedit, no group policy, on Windows Vista Home Basic.

what are you talking about?
I am not going to argue that because im not 100 percent sure but I really do think there is a group policy in it. I mean when I look up services through my management console I can find the service group policies(scrn 5) and also when you look up your startup options(msconfig) and look up your startup services its in there too(scrn 4). It also shows me that I can only log into it as a system account(scrn 6). So to me it means that its there unless you have another answer. But hey even if you know how I can disable the reverved bandwidth limit(windows automatically reserves 20 %). I honestly am not sure if it's there but I think it is however if it is there I also do realize that its probably just basic and you probably can't set very much because of lack of support for the os.

(I have attached 3 scrnshots)

That's the group policy client, not the group policy editor. As you've already discovered, there is no gpedit.msc on Windows Vista Home Basic because you can't create group policy objects with it.

oh i see. lol that sucks big time. Lol I hate this os that came with my comp. I desperately wish to switch back to xp until I buy a better copy of vista and wait until vista's been around a little longer so that everyone can work out the bugs. But I can't because XP would not have the drivers and I wouldn't even be able to get them online because I use windows xp peerweb. I mean what kind of a company sends you a computer that has home basic and 512 mb of ram. I mean the first thing I did was upgrade to 1.5gb. It's pointless to even turn it on otherwise cuz its so sluggish. I find that vista likes to sit at around the same amount of memory as XP. I donno where everyone else thinks that you need like 2 gb because thats only if you need it. Windows vista will run smoothly on like 750-800 mb so if anyone else out there has 512 mb and not very much money I wouldn't recomend this but you can simply buy a 256 mb chip to get windows to run a little more smoothly. But I personally think your better off to spend the extra 50 bucks to get 1 gb chip like I did.

so your telling me that they put in the group policy client to read gp's yet they couldn't be bothered by simply putting in a simple 3-4mb snap in to read the group policies. How pathetic. they just keep getting dumber and dumber at micro. I want my xp back lol.

That is way it is CALLED "Basic".

"I mean what kind of a company sends you a computer that has home basic and 512 mb of ram."

Because you did NOT spend the money for the better version of Vista and better hardware.

LOL ya i know after all i didn't even pay for it it came free. but I still think that they should send you a comp that barely works. But thats partly microsofts fault because I personally think that the min req specs should be set art 1 gb. anything much less doesn't work well at all

I can't see where it's Microsoft's fault that the company who built and sent the computer to you, put only 512 MB's ram in it.
It sure looks like the 'company' doesn't really care what specs are needed to run the OS efficiently.
