I blocked my harddrives!
Hello there,

I'm having some problems with my laptop. During my study some guy wanted to use my laptop so i decided to make an extra account and block my C:/ DATA drive and G:/ SYSTEM drive (2nd drive) for non-admin accounts. But after i did this all my accounts were unuseable to go into any drives (Including my administrator account) So changing back the settings doesn't work also. Is there anything i could do to undo or change my privacy settings to get back into my drives? I'm running on a dutch windows vista but when i klick on one of the drives it says something like C:/ drive not accesable.

Thanks if anyone has a solution to this problem! Would be much appreciated.

You could log in as Administrator: Press 'F5' at Windows boot, select 'Safe Mode' after logging in as Administrator.

You should be able to access your drives this way, and also go into User Preferences and Accounts and make the changes you need to.

You may have to set up a whole new account if something's gotten way out of whack, but you'll be able to transfer your old data.

Hm that didden't seem to work. I have a total of 3 accounts and 2 are administrator (That's possible right?) And 1 is guest - nonadministrator. When i klicked on safe mode it went to the screen were i could pick an account to logon.

When i chose my main account and logged on it didden't allow me to get into the drives i've blocked and it also doesn't allow me to change account settings or whatever since i've blocked my data and system drive.

Are you logging in with the Administrator system account, and not some other account with administrative rights?

What exactly did you do to block access?

I just tried to do a rollback with my recovery CD to 2 days ago. Unfortunatly that only counted for my E drive. I did loose my guest account, but it didden't solve the problem for entering my main C and G drive.

What i did was i right klicked on my C drive and went to properties -> security and klicked off read files for guest accounts. (I can't exactly tell you since my pc is installed in Dutch language and when i go to security now it says i am not aloud to watch or edit it) when i blocked the C drive (which i tought was for guest accounts only) i checked my guest account and saw it was blocked so i also wanted to do the G drive (Since i only wanted the guests to use photoshop) so i did the g drive and it was blocked also.. but stupid enough from me i didden't check my main account.. which is still blocked at this very moment.. It's almoust impossible for me to change settings... installing programs to do a rollback also doesn't work since im not aloud to.. I also can't put files as backup on my memory stick

I really hope someone can help me out with this since i have to edit certain files before tomorrow for my study.

(and yes i tried to go on safe mode on both accounts i have atm)

Unfortunately, you're probably out of luck. You changed the permissions to the point that your orphaned files that now no one can access. It's a real risk when making those kinds of changes.

If no accounts have any rights to access them, then no, there's no way to read, copy, back up or do anything.

You could always try reinstalling Windows or running a repair.
