Smile Vista reformat, where did I go wrong?
Hello Everyone,

I had recently bought my wife a new laptop. A Gateway T1616 ( Not like the one used to bullseye Womprats) and of course filled to its gullet with BLOAT WARE!

Now I'm no tech savvy computer wizard, but I've reformatted my XP on my desk top
every now and again so I thought how hard could this be. "D'OH!!"
Now I never reformatted a laptop but it came with the OS disk, and I had the product key.
I read enough on the web to back up the system. I backed up all essentials and went to town.
I reformatted the drive and now it's not reading anything. I reinstalled the ATI Radeon drivers
and tried to get that up but it's not detecting it. Same with my wireless,
I thought that I replaced all the essentials, but it doesn't detect any wireless systems at all.

It's operating normally. No Bloat ware. It just doesn't connect to the internet or detect
it's own system. My last resort will to admit defeat and bring it to Geek Squad, but I will
exhaust all option before that time comes.

It came with no other discs, drivers or otherwise. Just the 32-bit Vista Operating Sys.

Of course when I bought it they, The Squad, said they would remove all bloatware for a handsome fee of $120.00. Highway robbery, but I think I may have no choice.

What if I bought XP Pro, do you all think I'd still have the same problems? I was never attracted to Vista, now I down right don't like her.

Thanking all who reply in advance!
eRod

Worse problems as you won't have XP drivers for this. You probably need to install the wireless driver...if you go to Toshiba site for "support and downloads", you can find all the drivers you need.
If you type in dvmgmt.msc in "Run"...any yellow "?". To get "run" to appear if it does not, you have to right click the task bar choose properties, Start Menu, Customize and find it and check it off. For some reason many systems defaulted that off.

Thanks for responding Rich-M
It says "cannot find 'dvmgmt.msc' " Toshiba? It's a Gateway. Or is that a Toshiba part?

I saved all the folders and put them back in, sans the bloat ware. It's just not reading it. I tried to reinstall the video card through the ATI folder and it said I didn't have permission.
I can use all the help I can get.

No sorry Gateway site...I got this confused with another post here.
It's "devmgmt.msc".

On a different computer go to Gateway's web site, download the drivers, burn them to a CD or copy them to a flash drive, install them on the laptop.

http://support.gateway.com/support/d...am=T1616&st=kw

Start with the chipset driver.
