Hi Chriss -- I've taken the liberty of removing your email address. Openly published addresses are culled by "spam" bots and it is a recipe for such.

Your error type can be caused both by hardware and driver faults.

Let's have a further look:

I can run a debugging utility on the dump files if you do this:

1 > create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like
2 > navigate to %systemroot%\minidump and copy the last few minidump files to that folder.%systemroot% is normally c:\windows. They are numbered by date. You can paste that address in address bar to get there.
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.
4 > use the "manage attachments" in the "advanced" reply window to upload that zip file here as an attachment.

This might point us to a 3rd party driver causing the error, if one exists for it.

>> Also, Vista has many diagnostic tools, including a memory checker (run mdsched.exe read the additional info and perform extended tests.

>> in the Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Advanced, there is also a Health Diagnostic that you can run -- as well as further information on current errors.

Have a look at the Health Report, and in particular the Hardware diagnostics.

>> If you have installed any new programs or attached any new hardware they would be particularly suspect.

>> you can try "System Restore" as a possible quick fix; these can be undone if not helpful. System Restore should be available from your Start Menu or just "search" for it.

>> Finally, if you like, you can try "Clean boot" troubleshooting to isolate any recent, non hardware issue >>

Hi Rog,

Thanks for your reply.

I have done as you asked - i think!! - have attached the files.

I have installed winamp, winrar and grabit recently (within the last 24hrs) and these may hav caused the problem.

i have since uninstalled winamp and i uninstalled newsleecher as it wasn't working also.

many thanks,

Chris

Unfortunately all of the stops are in win32k.sys, a core system driver that doesn't give us any specific answers as it handles many types of operations. The faulting 'process' is either Firefox, or Explorer -- but again, this is misleading and I don't think either is at fault.

You may have some drive corruption or as this is a laptop. The fault appears to be occuring during an icon search: Probably caused by : win32k.sys ( win32k!SearchIconCache+20 )

Since this problem is recent, if it were my system, the first thing I would do is run System Restore. What System Restore does not resolve is usually hardware related.

If no luck with that, run chkdsk /r on the drive. You will be prompted to reboot. After rebooting you can find the log in the Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc) > Applications Log >> chkdsk or winninit entry (it can vary)
