Defragmenting Vista - Nothing is happening
Hi, I have recently bought a pc with Vista installed. Having installed all my programs I ran 'Disc Defragmenter' from the system tools and it informed me that I did need to defragment. I set it going and many hours later it was still going so I stopped it. In Vista it seems you cannot see if it is making any progress. I have since tried another 2 or 3 times and on each occasion it just runs and runs with no end result. The last time I left it running for 24 hours. Any ideas please? Thanks, Mick

ps I'm alaso getting an error No. 8000FFFF when I use Windows Update - don't know if this can be connected in any way but I'm making that fault the subject of a separate post

The vista defrag is designed not to show its progress! It should by default run in the background. It does work but as you say it's very annoying. My advise would be to download a 3-party defrag. utility at least so you can see the state of your drive. Perfect disk is great so is Diskeeper 2008 you get 30 days trial - more than enough time to defragment your drive. One other thing before defraging delete any files/folders not required - use diskclean in vista system tools. I also suggest turning off system restore as it gets in the way for proper defragmenting/ consolidating, re-enable after it's done.

Thanks to both of you - I'll give the 3rd party defrag a go
