Unhappy Windows Vista Help/Support not working (FULL VERRSION)
I bought the upgrade version of Vista Ultimate last April, and upgraded it off of my existing BETA version of vista that was already on my computer. Everything so far works, but for the help/support function. When you buy the upgrade, does it use the roots of the original operating system already installed? If this is true then there must be other things that are still in 'beta form' (Which sucks because I freakin paid for the real thing)

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks

First of all how did you "Upgrade from Vista Beta to Vista RTM"?

The "Upgrade" version is the same as the "Full" version except that a earlier version (2K or XP) is needed to be installed or the CD being place in the CD drive to tell that there is a legal copy of Windows for this machine.

FYI, I did not upgrade from beta to rtm. I upgraded from RC1 to the full version that I bought at the store. The full version still has the same problem with the help/support function. If it is because it used the code from the beta, then that means that the full version is using code from an operating system (RC1) that could be falty. If so, then it would make more sense for me to install my older XP, then the full vista.

RC1 was Beta, and one was NOT to try and install the RTM without doing a Clean install.
I am surprised that the RTM install allowed you to do a upgrade.
Did you have to reinstall all of your earlier programs?

To get to your problem, I believe that you are going to have to do a clean install of the Retail version of Vista to clean things out.

I have 2 machines running Vista and have no problems with "help/support". If one was Beta testing Vista you would have found out the the help/support was not available until LATE in the game and did NOT always work until RTM.

I stated this in the first post; the vista I bought wa sthe upgrade version, meaning a copy of XP or vista beta had to be on the machine. During install, I formatted the disk when it asks which hard drive you want to install on. However, I'm not sure if everything was deleted since there is a problem that BETA had. Is the help/support thing in the start menu just not working, or is it busted because of bad code from beta?

Like I said I have seen NO issues with help/support on any production machine. There MUST be something messed up with YOUR machine.

What happens when you try and use help/support from the Start Menu?

Run this reg file. It'll fix it up again for you. It is a common fault and has to do with the Help function losing its path in regedit. Run the attached file and it will sort it for you.

Dave, there is nothing wrong with my machine. I have installed both the 64 and 32 bit versions, and it runs well. There is something wrong with the operating system.

Thanks Uhaligani
