Windows Vista Registry Issues
Hello,

I have a Windows Vista Home Premium Gateway pc. I am getting the following error messages when I try to add my printer software CD. The printer is an HP Deskjet 3915 and it worked with another Windows Vista pc that I had. However, on this one I can't add it. Any idea what may be wrong?


slbcsp.dll - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\Defaults\Provider\Schlum berger Cryptographic Service Provider

Those are regisry locations, not error messages. What exactly is the "error" message?

I don't believe those dlls belong with Vista.

Are you sure you are using the right version setup file for Vista?

They are all, as you can see, Microsoft cryptography drivers. It looks like the service is not running.
I had a browse through the technet pages and found this:

Verify that the Microsoft Cryptographic Services Service Is Started
To verify that the Cryptographic Services service is started (and to start it if it is not):
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type net start cryptsvc, and then press ENTER.
Type exit to quit Command Prompt.

Register .Dll Files
Re-register the following .dll files:
Softpub.dll
Wintrust.dll
Initpki.dll
Dssenh.dll
Rsaenh.dll
Gpkcsp.dll
Sccbase.dll
Slbcsp.dll
Cryptdlg.dll

To do so:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following lines and press ENTER after each line:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Click OK when you receive the message that DllRegisterServer in FileName succeeded.
Type exit to quit Command Prompt.

I, quite honestly, cannot see how this will solve the printer installation problem, as the two things are not related, but have a go.

Hello Uhaligani,

When I run the "Run" feature and type cmd, click ok, then at command prompt type, "net start cryptsvc" and press enter, I get the following error: System Error 5 Access Denied. By the way, I am doing all of this as the computer administrator and have entered the user account password when I first logged in. Also, I am now getting a message upon startup that some programs have been blocked and when I attempt to unblock them, it doesn't let me, apparently because of the same thing.

Do I need a Registry Fixer or something? I downloaded "Advanced Registry Optimizer" software but have yet to use it. Please help!

Please do not use any registry optimizer. They are junk, dangerous, and cause more problems than they solve.

Try posting an HJT log (HijackThis) in the Malware forum since the symptoms sound like an infection.

Hi Elvandil,

Actually, I uninstalled the Registry Optimizer when I remembered previous advice given here to another poster. Also, the printer is finally installed and running after I plugged it into the wall outlet and turned it on! It was hooked up to the pc port all of the time, so I don't know why it would not install.

However, I am still left with the pc startup blocked programs which I don't know how to fix. There seems to be a lack of recognition that I am the pc administrator, which I am and have even typed in a password.

Any suggestions? I've been sitting here for two days straight tearing my hair out! You guys/ladies are wonderful!

Hi again,

I forgot to mention that I just picked up the pc yesterday, it's brand new. However, I have been installing/uninstalling software and even re-installed Windows Vista from scratch because I thought I had inadvertently deleted essential programs. I'll still run the virus scan just to be sure.

Most hardware needs to be powered to be detected by the PC.

Are you sure you are running from an admin account?

A virus scan is by no means sufficient to be sure that you are uninfected. An anti-virus may pick up less than 10% of the threats out there now since most of them do not meet the strict definition of a "virus".

I do not have any of those files that you are receiving "errors" in on my Vista system (except for cryptsvc). I do not think they are used, can you actually find them in the system32 directory.

As for the cmd error, create a shortcut to cmd.exe (it's in the system32 directory), right click on that and select "run as administrator" to try those commands.

You may also need to do this with certain setup files. The "run as administrator" option should be in the right click menu.

Again are you installing Vista drivers for the HP, downloaded from the HP website? You may be having problems because the setup versions you are trying to run are not Vista compatible.

Smile Problem Appears Solved
Hello again,

I was able to successfully install the printer simply by turning it on (duh!), and the virus scan found no invaders. Also, that error message I was getting about startup files being blocked disappeared and resolved itself as soon as I uninstalled Registry Optimizer. What junk! You were 100% right about its being more trouble than help.

Can't thank you enough.
