I feel better now !
Linux crowd?
I suggest you peruse the UNIX/Linux forum.

After that, you may want to take note of the tuxedo under the santa hat at the top of all these pages.

How about that eh! You are benefitting from the "Linux crowd" everyday!

Now we both know where windoze comes from.

If you are like me and can't get your head around shell windows and command lines, but want a computer you can own yourself to turn on and use, immediately, then may I suggest PCLinuxOS. I have been using it since last February and have yet to use a command line!

Well I've been trying to get a somewhat badly coded Win95 program, running and Vista won't do it despite all the compatability options. So I played with Virtual Machines (to try the app with Win98SE), and later tried experimented with Vista as a guest OS, which ran reasonably smoothly.

For quick comparison the Win Experience numbers of virtualised contained a surprise. The Disk subsystem was actually slightly faster, despite having to go through Vista's NTFS -> VDI disk -> Linux File System. All of other values cpu/memory speed were 10-15% slower as expected, except for graphics which were much poorer (as expected) due to no driver support for 3D acceleration.

BTW If anyone does look in UNIX/Linux forum, the answers will tend to have command lines, and requests for text output, because it's a lot more accurate on a text forum, than trying to pilot a GUI via text posts.

p.s. I know people who now buy MACs since Vista came out, might just be the way to go to break the monopoly.
Actually, *IF* Apple really wants to take a huge chunk out of the home-desktop market - NOW is the time for them to sell MAC-OS as a stand alone product. IE: Apple-Hardware version is still $100~110. Sell a PC-Generic version for $150~200... comes with ATI/Nvidia. But it would have the same problem with Vista to some degrees, with all the hundreds/thousands of different motherboards out there - they'd need to drivers for the hardware. But a semi-simple solution would be for recent motherboards and if Audio onboard isn't compatible - the end user would have to get a Creative Labs card... oh well.

Even if Apple did that I still wouldn't buy there stuff. Noticed how insecure Apple is. Steve Jobs has to take cheap pot shots at Microsoft. Whats Microsoft doin, siting back and raking in more cash because people are realizing Windows is a better OS. Gee thanks for giving me more business Steve Jobs and boys at Apple!!

After that crushing rejoinder from RootbeaR I have seen the light and am going to peruse the UNIX/Linux forum.

No katabby. It's yet another of the ever increasing threads which has lost it's way in this (Windows Vista) forum. It would probably have fitted better in the "civilised" debate forum.
I would imagine the "70 year old woman" lost interest days ago!

I just have to say that I haven't had any problems at all with Vista. It came preinstalled on the only computer I could afford on hire-purchase, so I didn't have a choice as to systems. I worried about it because of the reports of problems and difficulties but haven't come across any yet. It has 1015 MB memory and a dual-core processor. It runs my "Absolute Patience" and "E-Word" Scrabble-type game with no problems. I have a cable connection to the internet and don't find any problems surfing and using email.

Hope you don't mind me asking while I'm here....if everythings running well, should I still install any service pack that becomes available? Thanks.

Penny

For someone who is not comfortable with beta software the simple answer is no. However for someone like myself who is very comfortable with beta software and testing the simple answer is yes go for it. Some people like to wait until the final SP release is out, then install it. To answer your question directly, yes you should install any and all service packs from Microsoft. Only install those that you get from the Microsoft update site, as ones may claim to be an "offical" release of the SP but are actually very bad. I hope that answers your question Tuppence

Too right!" There is actually one floating around on the web at the moment, labelled SP1, which in fact has nothing to do with Microsoft and is a load of earlier updates.
