Unhappy Vista - I can't even give it away
I have a brand new Toshiba laptop which I received as an insurance claim. It has been out of the box for one week.

I uninstalled Norton and tried to put in AVG, after downloading it when I went to run it, the message said 'Software incomplete or corrupt'.

Whatever I do, it will not let me install any AV on the machine - I have wiped all AV software off now and to date have tried AVG, AVAST and Kaspersky - all have the same message.

I called Toshiba to tell them and got through to a call centre, the guys English was dreadful which made taking direction hard but he told me to press down the on/off switch for an emergency shut down and restart in 'safe mode'.

I did this whilst on the phone and of course it didn't work. He then said he could offer no more help as there was nothing else to try.

I telephoned Windows Vista who said I must call Toshiba for help again or if I wanted them to help me then I would have to pay £46 (approx) for it as my software has been preinstalled.

I have even been in to our local Dixons to talk to one of the IT guys who told me to ask my husband to do it for me! and that 'installing AV software is complicated'.

Nobody can help me, I offered a friend this brand new Toshiba notebook for £50, and he said if I paid him to have it he wouldn't touch it. Nobody wants VISTA and noone seems to have any idea of how to fix mine.

Im thinking of taking it to the charity shop tomorrow if I can't sort this out. It only cost me the £100 excess on my policy and I cant afford to shell out £46 to talk to someone on the phone and goodness knows how much XP would cost to reinstall.

As a last ditch attempt, can anyone help me at all?

Yours hopefully

Samantha

It was the one that said it was compatible, I checked it. Im at work now and havent got the info.

Im so depressed about it as we are emigrating next year and I wanted this laptop to take with me, I can't afford to by more software as every penny counts. Ive never had a computer that I dread turning on before

Yesterday I turned it on and it wouldn't start, then it started itself in emergency mode - Toshiba said 'that happens sometimes'.

Im almost tempted to switch to a Mac (gulp - well not quite as yet)

Its the not being able to get Toshiba to help even though windows have said they should.

Thanks for your reply anyway, Im going to keep an eye on this thread with hope I can get an answer. There is a free beer in it for the one who fixes it - they will have to move to Oz to get it

When it had Norton on it was so slow and kept crashing, I couldn't really access the net for more than 2-3 minutes.

Ive never liked Norton really and have always removed it from my computers and stuck AVG in with no problems.

Have a look in the general security forum. I have a feeling I read there that AVG is not compatible with Vista, but I could be wrong, so check it out. Also, Norton is a lot of trouble to un-install sometimes, and you may need to go to the Norton site do download what is needed. Check it out anyway, as all the info is there. Good luck

Actually AVG in some versions are compatible with Vista it just depends which one he installed. But if it worked from when you bought your computer, system restore it back otherwise you may need to purchase Vista because I know for a fact they dont come with the laptops which really pees me off

Well, I'm looking at AVG Free Edition version 7.5.503 running on my HP Core 2 Duo laptop, which has Vista Home Premium.

I first got rid of the installed Norton with the uninstall tool downloaded from Symantec. I didn't use the Vista File remove utility as I've read it can leave some Norton files.

Maybe you can use more memory in that laptop too.

Yall might want to keep an eye on your system with AVG Free or Pro. Trust me, it is not the highest rated AV. Your better off running norton.

I suggest running Eset or Trend Houscall or Panda's or all of the above on-line scanners from time to time.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/

AVG only gets 8% of Retrospective / ProActive scans
Which means, if you never do an on-demand scan, you are probably infected.

AVG = rubbish

"Im almost tempted to switch to a Mac (gulp - well not quite as yet)"

Read the news lately. Mac's have a glaing hole that allows attackers in with ease. Direct root access, isn't very hard to gain access to.
Plus, a little social engineering on part of the virus writers and macs will be crawling with viruses soon. Majority don't even run with anuti virus, believing that Mac's CAN"T get viruses.

"Nobody wants VISTA"

Only true cause people are affraid of change, and the media have blown little things out of the water, and the OEM's like Toshiba aren't selling Truely Vista ready systems.
Sounds to me like you got a bad install of the OS, or there is a hardware problem. Possible that reinstalling the OS (preferably without all of the Toshiba bloatware) would resolve all of your issues, then look at hardware.

Or first try a mem diag (memtest86), HD diag (manufactureres diagnostics, check thier website, it is probably a toshiba drive).
Amazing the Toshiba tech didn't help you with this.

Also,,,, try this Norton Removal Tool

Um Better off running Norton... NOOOOO

Norton is ****...

AVG is the best. Do not install norton. It screwed my PC once I dont want anyone to have the same prob. AVG was rated the best Antivirus at the start of this year. It recieved 5 out of 5 stars where as norton recieved 3/5

AVG is the best for Vista!

AVG recieved 5 out of 5 stars

Says who?

You better go study the site I posted, you would be better informed.

I may not have made it clear that I do not recommend norton either. but you would be better off with norton than AVG.
Better yet, NOD32 or even KAV. Avira gets the best ratings. The site I posted is an unbiased, non-profit testing site. They don't take payments to rate anything.
Unlike PC Mag, ZDNet, Cnet or the other rags. 5 out of 5. Wonder how much they paid for that rating.

Norton! No!

You have other problems related to the installation of your antivirus.

There's usually a reason WHY it won't install.

Got a screenshot? Or can you make one?
