Can't make partition on my disk
Hi, I'm using Vista and I tried to make a partition on my disk with no success.

I right clicked My Computer, clicked in manage, then disk management. I simply can't shrink Drive C to make space for the new partition. I have almost 40GB free in my disk and it will only shrink around 110MB. I have run scan disk and disk defragmantation, so I believe the disk is pretty healthy.

What's the solution for this problem?

thanks!

Not sure what you mean ICONIC

I have created partitions before installing Xp (for instance) then used Partition Magic (from Dos Boot) to recreate/or remove partitions.

Mind you this iso will do it better for Vista

Boot from the Vista DVD. Open a command prompt and type:

diskpart /?

That will show you the commands available and you can partition from there.

Be sure to defragment before trying to resize. If the space you are trying to take is occupied, it complicates the resizing.

Gparted is way too complicated for me! :P

I tried diskpart and the same problems happened. Althoug I have 40gb free it won't allow me to shrink let's say half of it.

Did you try defragmenting and trying again?

You can do it with a partitioner. Parted Magic disk partitoning tool (Bootable CD image) will do the job, but be sure to run chkdsk /r on the drive first, defragment it thoroughly, run chkdsk again. You want the drive to be in tip-top condition before using that partitioner. Then, boot from the CD and do your partitioning.

You may need to run Startup Repair after you are done if Vista won't boot due to the partition change.

I'm curious, why do you want to increase the complexity with out any real gains? even new top flight computers seldom come with partitions except to seperate restoring files from the rest of the files.
