Exclamation Solved: Windows Media Player 11 Error
Hi,
I have owned my new computer (Dell XPS 410) for about a year now and have had almost no problems with Vista. BUt just recently, about a month ago, I noticed that when I downloaded a video from the internet, and then went to watch it, I got this error message from WMP "the file wmploc.dll has a version number of 11.0.6000.6344 where 11.0.6000.6366 was expected[...]Windows Media Player is not installed correctly and must be reinstalled[...]Do you want to install the player from the Microsoft website?" I click OK, and it takes me to the Microsoft web site to the XP download of Media Player. Now I know already that WMP 11 for Vista is not available for download, so why did it take me there? When I do download it...it says it is not possible to run an older version over a newer version.
I emailed Dell...and all they said was to do a system restore. This may have happened more than a month ago, and I am not prepared to lose that much data.
(btw there is a thread on this site about it http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/in...561&forumid=23
Anyone know a solution to this?
I know one thought was to put in your vista DVD and let it repair it...but I only have the Dell vista upgrade from XP DVD...will this still work?

Thanks in advance!

I cannot find any record of that file version associated with WMP.

If you open WMP and click on "Help" > About -- what is the file version of the installed player?

I believe it should be as the first version of wmploc.dll -- .6344

If you open the Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools and look at the Advanced > Reliability and Peformance Monitor -- what was inatalled just prior to these errors beginning?

Woops...sorry...the version expected was .6336
I went into Reliability and Performance Monitor and found that on the 15th of october...i installed a windows media player firefox plug-in. I have heard this may cause problems...i'm trying to attach a screen shot of this but it may not work...
this is probably what caused this...but I already uninstalled firefox...

Try the "fix" or "workaround" here for the same error. Suggestion: export these keys before deleting them so you can restore them if necessary:

They are registry keys. Run regedit.exe and navigate to them.

There may be an error in the article; in my Vista > these registry values are under the key >>

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup\installed versions

You can just export and then delete the "installed versions" key in the left pane to accomplish what they are suggesting.
I haven't tested this so do be sure to save (export) the key before trying it so you can restore it if things don't work out or it makes things worse.

Alternately you may want to just try deleting the "wmploc.dll" value in the right pane.

MY WMP 11 is not responding
I am posting this as a reply hoping that the same guy that helped the initial poster will get to it....

I install an update to my WMP 11 and now it says that it is improperly installed.... takes me to the microsoft website to reinstall... after installing the vista update, it says that I have a newer version and aborts installation....

This problem has screwed up my media center- xbox360 connection and my netflix.../.

I have found several people with the same problem and no one has an answer... please help

You should start you're own thread for this; users will see the 'Solved' and not attempt to address your issue.

However, try removing the update:

1. Open Installed Updates by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then, under Programs and Features, clicking View installed updates.

2. Select the update that you want to remove, and then click Uninstall. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

reply
problem being that I cant figure out which file it was.... none of them say "Windows Media Player," they all say Microsoft WIndows or Vista.... I imagine that is because WMP 11 is integrated into vista.... it does say this, cumilitive update for media center for windows vista (KB935652)...

I dont want to delete it and send make matters worse, do you know what this means?
