i have two HDD connected to my PC. The second HDD is being reported as S.M.A.R.T failure everytime i reboot or in regular intervals ...

The check Disk reported no failures ...
The Disk Management shows the drive is healthy ..

What can i do to find the problem or even fix it ?

I'm not sure where the entire "S.M.A.R.T." report might be kept in Vista, if at all -- but if you run eventvwr.msc and look at the Applications and Services logs, under Microsoft > Windows -- there are a number of "diskdiagnostic" logs there -- perhaps they contain something.

Also in the Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools there are a couple of diagnostic features that can be run or looked at.

For a full SMART report, you can try installing SpeedFan which includes one. You will have to select the drive you want it run on.

The event viewer has these lines ..

Windows Disk Diagnostic was invoked for a S.M.A.R.T. fault, but no new faults were detected. The diagnostic will exit without performing any corrective action.

Windows Disk Diagnostic successfully scheduled interactive resolution for a S.M.A.R.T. fault.

SppedFan , in SMART tab, i cannot select any of the HDD's .. it is blank

ActiveSmart does not run .. it says the Active Smart service wass topped due to some problem

I don't know why none of your drives are selectable -- but based on the diagnostic report, it would be dicey not to backup critical data. Can you get a diagnostic program for it from the drive vendor? If it fails that it is surely returnable under warranty.

In the mean time I would back up everything you need on that disk.

You might also try reseating the cable for the disk.

SMART usually gives an error # when reporting a problem, I 9imagine West. Digital is the same. Maxtor will nt give an RMI until you specify that #. SMART is an acronym for "self monitoring and reporting technology".

I should have added that SMART error messages do not come from Vista, they come from the HDD.

Pease see atatchment and sugegst what i could do to correct it if possible .
The HDD is out of warranty. This HDD was idle and not in use for over 8-10 months ..
Before i stopped using it , it was absolutely fine ...
based on this ifo, is there something i cld do ?

The drive has so many "bad blocks" that they have been locked out in "reallocated sectors". You have no more room to lock out bad blocks -- this is why drive corruption is imminent and you should replace the drive.

Most manufacturer drive warranties are good for a minimum of 3 years.

Hard disks are the most errror prone, certain to die, unreparable , of all peripherals. Think about all those disks spinning atr 7200 or at least 5600 hour after hour, day after day; somethings gotta give. I have replaced many of my own over the years and many for others. Figure the HDD thats just fine today is on the brink always. I must say that your doomed to replace the bad-boy you have now, and when you get another, start thinking of backing up to a second drive for you will surely face the todays dillemna again.
