Display driver error
Not sure if this is exactly pertenant to this forum but maybe you guys can help/direct me?

Anyway, I had Vista 64 bit installed on my laptop but had to buy and install 32 bit to be able to access the internet in my dorm, and I think that messed up my video drivers because the laptop wasn't recognizing that it had a nVIDIA 8600 card, but anyway I was sent the drivers and installed them but now I keep getting an error message saying something like 'Display driver nvlddmkm has stopped working and recovered' (I'm sure it is display driver nvlddmkm but I didn't write down the whole thing) in the middle of a game of Bioshock or Call of Duty 4!!! Anyone know what I should do/where I go from here to get it fixed?

Completely uninstall your driver in Add/Remove and/or Device Manager.

Run one or both of these to be sure all parts of the driver are removed:

Driver Cleaner Professional
Nasty File Remover

Then, go to NVidia, download and install the new driver:

www.nvidia.com/drivers

You might try also installing the chipset drivers for your mainboard, too.

I know I sound stupid but just making sure:

When I manually installed the video drivers it was from a site the laptop company referred me to and was called 16375... On that drivers site I filled in the boxes and it prompts me a download of ForceWare Release 163 (version 163.75) which looks to me like the same thing?

Just voicing some concerns because when I was sent video drivers the first time by the company my laptop still didn't recognize them for some reason and I just don't want to mess it all up and not able to do anything. This shouldn't mess anything up right, just remove the drivers an reinstall them?

Also what does the process of installing drivers entail, because with the company they had me create a folder on my desktop named 16375 and extract the drivers to that folder then run the installation application from inside the folder. Don't know why. So will I need to do all that again when I remove the current drivers and download the new ones?

If you get the driver installer directly from NVidia, it is in the format of an exe file that you only need to click to both extract the files and begin the installation all in one step.

Not sure where you got them before--maybe your computer's site or the seller's site. But you can't do better for NVidia drivers than NVidia themselves.
