Solved: No shutdown button on vista?
hi all,

I have recently purchased from commet an acer aspire, vista home premium desktop pc, however it was an ex-display machine, and it was running some software they put on that although they uninstalled, did not change what it had done, such as blocking the use of the task manager. I have now fixed that and a couple of others through the registry, but how do i get the shutdown button on vista?

Thanks,

Nappymonster

At the bottom right of the Start Menu are three icons.
The left one (circle with a vertical line) is the Power Button
To change the action (Sleep, Hibernate or Power Off)

1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Select System Maintenance and then Power Options if it is the Default View or
3. Select Power Options if it is the Classic View
4. Under your current plan, click on Change plans settings
5. Click on Change advanced power settings
6. Click on the + by Power buttons and lid
7. Click on the + by Start menu power button
8. For the Setting, select Sleep, Hibernate or Shutdown
9. Click on Apply and OK
10. Now when you hover over icon, you can see the action it will take.

Not to take you away from what you really are asking for, but there is a setting where you can easily just push the Power button on the front of your computer and you computer will then go through the regular "shut down" actions, and properly close off all you opened files and then get the power off.

Most computers are already set to do just that. You might just try it. It might just do what you want.

Don't think that the Power button will only immediately remove power from the box. That is not how any modern computer is configured any more.

If your computer does not go through the normal shut down procedure, just come back and tell us. We'll then let you know how to "make it right."

For now if you hover the mouse over the right arrow in your screenshot 'shutdown' is one of the options offered.

I'll look into that - thanks! Though ultimately i would still like my shut down button!

I have read this before -

Quote:
killing the explorer.exe process in Task Manager and then starting it back up by using Run command in Task Manager that the Icon would come back.
Not sure if this will work and it is only a temporary fix anyway, seems to be some sort of bug with Vista.

EDIT: Sorry I misread the post, this fix was for the "Start" button disappearing, sorry about that!!

Have you tried right clicking "Start" and then Properties, and then "Customize" on the "Start Menu" tab,and then "Use default settings"

Quote:
Open "Registry Editor" >> Navigate to >>

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer

On the Right Pane Delete "NoClose"

Log off and Log in
This is a fix I found here from Devil_Himself,maybe the same "Devil_himself" from TSG

Not a fix as such, but... if yo uhave gadgets enabled, there are several that will put a log off/ restart/shut down menu on the gadget bar. I find it easier than trying to go down to start , press an arrow, choose an option etc.

To my mind, MS made a bit of as hash of the shutdown procedure. Put an off switch in that doesnt turn it off? Hmmmm.

Yes you only showed two icons. The information provided was how to change the one on the left to shutdown the computer.

If you do Ctrl-Alt-Del do you get a power icon (the one missing in your screenshot) at lower right ?

nappymonster,

So did you see now how to change the button, which is now set to lock, to shutdown the computer instead?

I think there is a misunderstanding of what you are seeking here.
You an create your own shutdown button, which migh satisfy you.
right click your desktop and create a new shortcut.
the following commands will do it:
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 01 is all you need or
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -r -t 01
The first as is obvious, will create a shutdown button. The second a reset button.
If you wish, you could then drag them over to the quick launch menu.

From your screenshot, you simply want the button shown to shutdown rather than lock the computer (which is looks like it is configured for right now).

Is that correct?

I never thought of that. I suppose i could probably make a bat file too, but my DOS programming is a little rusty

If i understand correctly will:

The first button shutdown in 1 minute of clicking, and
The second button restart in 1 minute?

Would:

shutdown.exe -s -f -t01

Shutdown in one minute, but force all aplications to close?
