Unhappy Solved: Vista Start Up Problems
Hi...

Newbie here.

I am having problems booting my PC up. It will boot up and powers up but just before the windows logo appears and asks me to enter my password it dies on me.
I ran a virus scan which found 2 infections which I disinfected, I've tried turning off all non microsoft products on startup. Safe Mode won't let me create a restore point. Windows Live Care created one on Decemeber 6th but in Safe Mode doesn't find it.

Please help as I'm really stuck as to what to do.

What happens when it 'dies' - do you get an error message, blue screen etc. ?
Did you add any software (including Windows Update) or hardware just before this started happening ?

Use your DVD if you want to try a restore point. Boot up with it and choose the repair option.

It just goes to a blank screen. No error messages or anything like that.
I haven't got the installation disk as the PC was bought from a family member who also didn't have the disk.

Someone must have a disk or there must be a recovery partition on the machine. What make and model?

I ran an online virus scan whilst in safe mode with networking (which allows you online whilst in safe mode...which is what I am using now0

A friend came to look at it and said it's a motherboard problem....is he right or talking through his rear?

OK. That helps but isn't too detailed. It doesn't tell us what brand, or most importantly, what chipset/mainboard. You can use these for even more information:

PCWizard
System Information for Windows (SIW)
Belarc Advisor
Mitec System Information

But what about using a restore point or Startup Repair? Do you have the Vista DVD?

Problem sorted now. There was a conflict of drivers. I managed to find which driver was causing the problem and deleted it. PC now runs fine and is running better that it was before.

Strange what you can do when you're just having a nosey round your computer.

Thanks for all you guys help. No doubt I'll be back with another problem soon....me and PC's just do not get on.
