Try booting up in safe mode.
If you can get into Vista via safe mode, make your recovery discs, if you can't do that, contact the manufacturer and ask for the discs to be sent to you.

OK, first of all you need the vista dvd in order to repair the bcd files. When you installed xp, it overwrites the vista boot files.

Next you cannot change the mode of the sata controller and expect the system to boot. While vista would probably boot after doing that, xp never will.

About the only option you have is to restore your system using the HP restore partition.

FWIW you now see why we stress backups SO much. With an image backup of your system, it would be a simple matter to restore the image and be back where you started from; with all of your docs back.

If the docs are really important, you can pull the drive and connect it to a working system. Copy the docs. Reinstall the drive and restore from the hp restore partition. Copy your docs back.
