Steps on how to dualboot Vista and XP
I just installed Vista on my PC and I have to tell you - I donn't know what a lot of people are complaining for, it works great for me. I recorded all my steps and I've decided to put them on here - before I was searching for them and I couldn't find them. They worked for me.

1. Insert the Vista CD into optical drive and start the setup file.
2. Click on “Go online to get the latest updates”
3. “Downloading installation of the updates” message will appear, wait. The screen will go back to desktop – wait. The vista the screen will appeal again with “Please wait”.
4. If you want to waste time read t listening he license agreement. It’s not, check the box where it says “I accept the license agreement” and click next.
5. “What type of installation do you want?” you’ll get two options: upgrade – which means to install Windows Vista over XP. Select custom – which will show you the partitions. Click on the partition that you would like to install Windows Vista and click next. The computer will collect information and then reboot. When the computer starts copying the files, it will reach 27% and restart for a second time. There will be a black screen and a message that’ll say “Please wait a moment while Windows prepares to start for the first time”. The colourful screen will come up again and the setup will try to complete that installation. The screen will turn off and on. The mouse made you some things that are strange. Then the background will go black and you will see the mouse for 15 to 20 second and the computer will restart. This time you will see a screen that gives you on option between older Windows operating system and Windows Vista.
6. At prompt screen and select your region, time and currency and keyboard layout. Click next.
7. Type in your username and select your picture. Click next.
8. Type in the computer name and select the background. Click next.
9. Click on the first option there.
10. Verify that the time zone, date and time are correct and click next.
11. Click Start up wait a bit. After playing the funny melody the computer will restart. You will see that screen where you’re going to have to select between the two operating system. Select Vista. Wolaa!

how big of a partition did you make for Vista, and what program did you use to partition?

It is hard to say. I've heard from people that the majority uses PartitionMagic and it works. I tried it for a second time and for a second time it messed up my computer with error 1517 or error 1715 - I don't really remember. I had to reinstall XP and when I was installing it I partitioned the 150GB hard drive into C: (70GB with XP Pro installed on) and D: (80GB with Vista Ultimate).

Might be a good idea to post a time line so no one starts this at 11pm thinking they are going to bed in an hour. You make this sound like a cakewalk thats done in ten minutes.
Took me two hours to get online with a brand new computer, Dual core, 2GB RAM, Vista Pre-installed.
After that Vista started up so fast that the monitor would go to sleep for five minutes before getting signal from OS.
Vista seemed to work fine for me too, but, when they say "get more done", do they really mean go do the dishes or vacuum while you wait for Vista?
Or does this brand new Vista ready PC need more RAM and upgrading?
http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/ca...%5FCL%5FMemory
Over $200 for more RAM.
I haven't got a clue why everyone is complaining.

Changed BIOS from raid and boot order, partitioned and formatted, wiping Vista for good, Installed PCLinuxOS, updated OS and all software, in less time than it takes to set-up pre-installed vista.

Now we have a 1GB stick of RAM for sale.

Not a clue as to why everyone is complaining, you'd think it was the only OS out there, even when they are dual booting!

Here is a time line from same OS, different PC (mine 3 yrs old), this am.

I am going to attempt a dual boot tonight. I have XP pro SP2 currently installed. I am going to try and partition a good 100 gigs on my C drive and install Vista Ultimate 64bit on it. Anyone got any suggestions, ideas before i start this project.

I will update this thread with a timeline as well. Thank you for the original post.

I really finished within an hour. It's not that hard to install it. But you're right - don't start installing Vista at 11 pm and you have school tomorrow.

PS: I'm just curious what kind of laptop do you have, RootbeaR? Can you screenshoot your laptop's page or you can give me your username and password for staples because that's what it asks.

fbodyracer02, what can I recommend you - you just don't know how much trouble the back up I did saved me. Get a couple of DVD-RWs and burn all the files you don't want to lose. You can erase them after not to waste CDs. Extremely important, OK.

On-line? Set-up totally complete?

Desktop.
Specs above.
Except, I now have 1.5 GB RAM. (Prob. a GB again soon with excess to another machine after I test with some pic editing)

I will look for friends model, the new PC I mentioned, desktop as well.
Here it is: HP a6218x

Sorry about the Staples link, didn't realize that.
Was just a link to prices of RAM where I live. Average $100 a stick(GB) plus tax.

Edit: I do a dual boot with XP as well, just so you know we aren't comparing apples to oranges..

Hey, fbodyracer02, I feel guilty now

So, you're Stuck on XP. I want you to do something before we change ... stuff.
Go to System Tools and check if both partitions on your HDD are set as active.
Let me know if you dont know what that is. I would have written you the exact steps but I'm just too lazy to reboot in XP, do the things, and then back to Vista.

Ontario, Canada, the land of the free. That means we can legally make back-ups of all our software, movies, games etc...so long as you own the original.

You missed this.

Do we have another taker for the time line? This ones at about half an hour to my minute, including my updates.
2hrs:1min without updates.

ooo, man I didn't count the updates, but it was long. I did them on the next day when I came back from school.
I'm in Mississauga (hope you know where that is). I was asking for a specific city.
