When i try to rename a folder (ie. when i make a new folder and try to name it,,,) after i push enter to confirm my new name for it.. it brings up an error box and says "The file or folder does not exist"

how do i fix this!?

You could get this for a number of reasons:

1) The file has been corrupted/changed/deleted and you need to refresh the directory (the file will probably disappear)

2) There is a read-only status on the folder (although it would probably say "Cannot rename" instead of "does not exist")

3) It is a 3rd party folder downloaded that may contain a virus which does not allow you to alter the name or directory (especially if the folder is in C:\Windows)

My bets are on option #1. #'s 2 and 3 are pretty rare and unlikely. Hope this helps. Please feel free to add anything.

It's none of those!

The problem happens even if I am the one creating a folder. I'll right click in an open area... click "new folder" and then when i try to name it is says that the file or folder does not exist. But it does let me save it as "New Folder" and i can still use it to put stuff in. Why the heck can't i name it?!

I know the answer!
This happened to me so i searched as much as i could to find an answer.
The reason it happens is something to do with the updates you install after you install the OS.

The Solution:
First go to "start>controlpanel>offline files"
then click "disable offline files"

Next:
Go to this website
Vista Fix
Download the "Newfolderfix.reg" File
Click yes when it asks you to continue to put the file into your registry.

After that, restart and it should be fixed!

I wasn't able to find the place to turn disable offline files. Can you provide a walk through?
