vista won't connect to the internet!!!!!!!!!!!
I have brand new Hp laptop Windows Vista, using wireless wlan. I'm trying to connect to the internet through the router. the laptop sees the router, but will not connect to internet, vista seems not to allow me to get on the network. Also when i open up the network and sharing center, click diagnose, it says the dns on this computer (the laptop) may be down. Can somebody, anybody help me with this problem?

Can you connect successfully via ethernet?

If your wireless is secured, disable encryption on the router and try that way.

While connected (or trying to connect) both wired and wireless please show

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

The ethernet adapter is showing as disconnected. Do you get a LED lighting on the PC and the router when you connect the cable?

You have a manually configured IP on the wireless; try dynamic.

All you need to do is open Network, Network & Sharing center,Connect to a network, see the network options available, highlight your router and then hit connect below...it's really simple, lets not make it complex.

It may seem that simple, but the problem is that my laptop sees the router and says that it is connected, and also laptop internet settings say that my wireless receives internet, but when i open up the browser, all i see is the message that it cannot find the server. It also says that it cannot find domain name server. How can i find my domain name server and fix this problem anyway?

Solved here
I spent a long time on this today with a customer, and finally solved it for him. His 6-month-old HP laptop was unable to connect to the internet, showing the connection as "Local Only". The final solution was completely uninstalling Norton 360, which apparently was conflicting with Vista and blocking access to the internet. I had tried flushing DNS, disabling the firewall and Defender, entering static DNS, etc. - nothing was working. Static DNS would work temporarily, then kick off again.

I am convinced that while Norton and XP are usually like children battling on a playground, Norton and Vista are even less compatible. I am running into nothing but Norton-Vista problems regularly. Use AVG Free, disable the User Account Control and its annoying popups, and stay simple.
