Solved: keyboard/mouse (vista maybe?)
I got a new comp. with Vista Home Premium. My problem is that when I shut down the comp., the mouse and keyboard stay on, even if I shut off the switch on the back of the psu. I've never encountered this problem before and some of my more "techy" friends are baffled. Is this a vista issue, mb issue or driver issue?

OS: Vista Home Premium
MB: MSI K9A2 Platinum

What do you mean by stay on?
My mouse is optical like most these days, and if you move it even while your machine is off, it will still flash.
It wont cause any problems.

Since it's a new PC I'll assume that the mouse and keyboard are USB.

Some (many?) USB ports now stay powered so that you can recharge your MP3 player and stuff--and maybe exhaust your laptop's battery!).

If I'm on the right track you might experiment to see if only some ports stay powered. Or maybe, I don't know how they work, they can be powered down by an option in Power Options or in the Properties of the USB ports/controllers (in Device Manager).

I mean it stays powered up. My mouse is optical too. Well, as you may know, when you let it sit for a minute the light will dim a bit until you move it again. The mouse always stays active, it doesn't even dim. I'm not worried about it causing problems it just struck me as odd. More of an annoyance.

Both plug into the PS/2 port. The mouse is usb but with a converter to PS/2.

I was looking at the hardware profiles for both and found an option under power management to allow the computer to shut off the device to save power but I can't even select it to see if that's what I need.

Now, for no reason, the keyboard shuts off but the mouse still stays on.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Is that when you turn the PC off?
If so, thats normal.

Yes, I know that's normal. What's not is the fact that the mouse still wont shut off.

After searching tirelessly, I found the answer. It would seem that TerryNet was on the right track after all. The PS/2 ports remain powered up on my mobo for whatever reason. It doesn't quite explain why my keyboard now shuts off but I'll take what I can get.
