VISTA BSOD while booting
Hey
I just bought a laptop with Vista Home Premium preinstalled and installed Office07 and Norton , but made no hardware changes and i am getting a Bsod when i boot with the following stop error details:

Stop: 0x000000E3 (0x80614DC0, 0x84838808, 0x00000000, 0x00000002)

C1.dll - Address 80614DC0 base at 8054A000, datestamp 4549bd95

I have tried the startup maintanence thing that pops up when you dont close windows properly, it even asked me to do a system restore , which i did but to no avail
I contacted Microsoft who said contact manufacturer (toshiba).
Please Help

I believe that is "CI.dll" which technically handles some "digital rights management" functions -- but may also have security features. There are programs around designed to crack it -- hope you haven't tried to install one.

Post a HijackThis scanlog and also upload some minidumps.

Download and install HijackThis. Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

I can run a debugging utility on the dump files if you do this:

1 > create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like
2 > navigate to %systemroot%\minidump and copy the last few minidump files to that folder.%systemroot% is normally c:\windows. They are numbered by date. You can paste that address in address bar to get there.
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.
4 > use the "manage attachments" in the "advanced" reply window to upload that zip file here as an attachment.

Since the laptop was brand new, i didnt have any data on it, so i did a toshiba restore to factory settings
and it seems to be working fine now.
(i lost MSoffice but have that on disk)
the only other thing i installed was a torrented norton360 which i burnt from a comp which i suspect has a virus so thanks.

as in i got my copy of norton 360 from a torrent and i burnt it(norton) onto a disc from a computer which i suspect has viruses/malware

Vista BSOD at startup
Hi,

I have the same problem on my new laptop. I'm sending the attached zip file "dumpcheck" as suggested by Rollin' Rog. If I press F8 I can startup Vista using the last good configuration available, but if I restart or shutdown the BSOD appears again.

Any help on this will be appreciated.

I only see one recent minidump in the dumpcheck folder and it is for your Realtek sound driver

BugCheck 9F, {3, 84c4cb98, 8697d330, 8571e780}


Probably caused by : Rtlh86.sys


If you haven't tried "system restore" as a solution, I would suggest this as a first recourse. You should be able to access it in Safe Mode or though your F8 "repair' menu.

If that cannot resolve the problem, boot up in Safe Mode with Networking support, go to the Toshiba site for your model number and get the latest drivers for the onboard sound chip and install them.

You should also install all available updates from Microsoft (with the possiible exception of SP1 for now) -- some of these address the 9F type of stop being generated here -- which I believe has to do with power management.
