Question Solved: Wierd SATA issue which should I do?
I have a 500gb WD SATA internal hard drive. I installed it into my system which has SATA connectors on the motherboard. However the motherboard doesn't recognize the drive. The motherboard has a VIA VT8237 South Bridge. I purchased an Adaptec 1205SA from BestBuy and the drive works great. The issue is that some things in Vista arn't working properly and according to a tech support guy at Microsoft it is due to the adaptec card not being supported by Windows Vista. My computer is working and I get around some of the problems. I just learned that Western Digital addressed the issue with the VT8237 and said just put a jumper on pins 5 and 6 and the drive will work. Putting a pin on 5 and 6 will lock the drive in 150mbs mode. I am thinking that 150mbs is going to be too slow. Someone told me that even though I have the Adaptec card installed which says 1.5gbs that the PCI slot cannot go that fast. So my question is should I leave it the way it is (hooked up to the Adaptec PCI card) or hook it to the motherboard and adjust the jumper setting? Thanks.

Try it on the board. Even at 150, it will be about twice as fast as an IDE and you may not even notice the difference.

Thumbs up Works good
Elvandil,

Thanks for your suggestion. It is working perfectly! I can now take out the Adaptec 1205SA card. The best part is that the on board SATA ports are fully supported by Vista, unlike the add-on PCI Adaptec 1205SA card. Thanks again!

Good work. I think you picked the best solution, and the one that will lead to the fewest future problems.
