My Windows Vista computer has always worked fine. But my son received an Ipod for Christmas and I believe that when I installed that hardware I somehow uninstalled my cd/dvd-driver. That cd/dvd-driver has always worked fine, but then I needed to burn cd's and the applications to burn did not show up. Through the device manager I found the following in the DVD/CD-ROM DRIVE: HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA H20L ATA DEVICE. I clicked on that and the DEVICE STATUS says: This device cannot start (Code 10). What can I do myself to fix problem if possible. Please Help....

1. Click on START button, the click on RUN.

2. Enter REGEDIT and press Enter.

3. When REGEDIT starts, open up the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

4. After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
"Upperfilters"
"Lowerfilters"
Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES.

I just wanted to make sure that the previous thread response would work for my HP Pavilion a1710n computer with the cd driver missing. I will try the previous suggestion, but in the event that it does not work--what would be my other options... Please help..

Hey Guys - I don't want to derail this thread, but I am also using VISTA and an having the same driver problem I have a pair of LG GSA-H55N Internal Multi DVD Rewriters installed on my secondary IDE, (configured jumpers on the drives) 1 as master and 1 as slave. I have contacted LG Tech support, concerning the problem "unable to load driver for the device" and the head geek is supposed to call me back today.

The tech on the phone pionted me to the Microsoft Solution located at

I also tried the automated solution, and also manually edited the registry to remove the "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" associated with key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I've tried both solutions without success...
Any one have the magic bullet for this one?

Delete the drives from Device Manager and restart.

Ok Evandil... I uninstalled both drives from within the Device Manager, shut the PC down (completely) then started the machine back up. Went directly to the Device manager I still have the ! next to the drives, even though widows correctly identifies the drives as model ...GSA-H55N .... When I click on the device properties, the message reads," windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupt or missing, (Code 39)."

I also thought that would do the job... What now....

The LG Tech still has not called me back as promised...

It was suggested that I uninstall all CD/DVD recording software, ie. Roxio, however I didn't follow those instructions. I figured the applications had little to do with the drivers. I'll check out your attachment and we'll see where we go from there...

I don't think the TEch from LG is going to call. Their website mentions "flashing the Firmware" on each drive. They Couple that with a warning that if you don't execute the operation exactly as instructed, your drive will become useless. Go figure

Roxio installs drivers that often become a problem. If you use the reg fix I just posted, it will inactivate the Roxio drivers so you may as well uninstall it if you used the reg fix. Use it again after uninstalling.

Evary app that uses the CD-ROM generally installs CD-ROM drivers, including Roxio, UltraIso, Daemon Tools, etc. Conflicts among those drivers is what causes the problem you are experiencing.

Both drives appear without the !, And both drives appear in Explorer as DVD/RW drives with letters E, and F assigned (as they should have been). No more Error code 39

PS. There are loads of good burning programs if you would like to avoid Roxio. I've developed an irrational hatred for it since I've had to solve so many problems that it caused.
