Slow Internet on Windows Vista
Hello,

My Dell XPS 1330 came with Vista installed and for a couple of months my internet was fast, but when I changed my service provider from Comcast to road runner a month ago, my internet slowed down significantly. I hardwired the modem to the laptop and speeds are below 2mbps. I cant stream the videos on youtube. I came across another thread on this forum which mentioned ot rollback the driver and since it was grayed out, I tried to download a previous version on broadcoms website, cant find a version older than v10 on their website.... Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh! one thing worth mentioning is my wireless seems to be fine since my internet speed seemed to be lot better when I use wireless...so would getting a wireless router solve the problem?

Thanks,
Jay

I our area we have 8 megs with bursts up to 12 megs download from Comcast.

I do NOT think that RR offers that speed, or you did NOT sign up for the faster speeds.

Check with RR to see what the download speed should be.

The speed that I signed up for is 7megs and the speedtest should reveal somewhere between 5.5 to 7.

You also need to read the FINE print, most will say "UP TO" what ever speed.

You can get a GOOD speed test at http://www.dslreports.com/stest

I dont quite think that there is something wrong with the speed, i say that becoz when I use my laptop from work, I can open any page without any delay, but when I plug the cable into my laptop, the speed is extremely slow...

Then it is your ISP (RR) that is the bottle neck or the modem and router that you have at home.

Again, to expalin clearly what I'm doing, I have my laptop hardwired (meaning the modem is connected directly to my laptop, no router!) and I see slow speeds, but when I unplug the ethernet cable and plug it into a different laptop (this comp has XP), the speed is lot faster..I dont know why you think that the ISP is the problem here, clearly the ISP and the modem are the same variables with two different computers one using XP which is faster than the comp with Vista as the OS.

BUT, you said that the laptop worked great at work, so the common item is the connection at home with the laptop.

Thats what I think is the ethernet adapter in my laptop, and I cant rollback my drivers on the ethernet card since its grayed out and the Broadcom netlink does not have an older version thats compatible with Vista...When I use wireless (I picked up my neighbors signal ,don't know who the ISP is) the speeds seem fine, so I guess I will just get a wireless router and see if that fixes the problem
