Solved: Windows Defender problem
I'm currently running Vista Ultimate 64 and recently after a reboot the security shield appeared. I clicked it to see what the problem was it and showed that Windows Defender was turned off. The problem is that I didn't turn it off and it was on the last time I noticed it. I've tried clicking to turn it on and after accepting / clicking continue nothing happens. It stays disabled / turned off. Is there a way to repair it? Has anyone had this problem before?

I'm not sure if this is related but my anti-virus software (AVG) recently turned itself off too and when I tried to enable it that too failed. When I went to uninstall it, it was suddenly enabled but only when halfway through the uninstall so I'm going to reinstall it shortly. I don't know what's going on but it's confusing and frustrating.

I've already tried that, as I said, it was probably the first thing I did try. It isn't as simple as that unfortunately and that's why I'm looking for information on a repair for it short of repairing Vista.

How about Admin Tools in Control Panel, Services and then scroll down to Windows Defender and make sure it is enabled.

Checked, enabled and automatic startup. Funny thing though, I stopped the service and restarted it and suddenly it decides to become enabled -_- Oh well, solved for now thanks for the idea. I'm not sure why I didn't think to try it sooner.
