Bootdiskmgr problem
Hi, I have a problem. My new computer just came in, and I installed Vistax64 on my raided raptors and windows can not boot without the install cd in the drive, it will just say bootdiskmgr not found ctrl+alt+del restart. I check the diagnostics, and it said there was nothing to repair. What should I do? Thanks!

What is the exact message you get on boot?

The exact message is "BootMGR is missing, press ctrl+alt+del to restart." Also, some weird things that could be related. I ran the diagnostic startup repair, and it said that vista was installed on local disk (d). however, that is the location of my other sata hard drive according to vista right now. My raided hard drives say c:/. Also there is a BOOTSECT.BAK on my D: drive that I did not put there. And Im new to raid, vista says local disc c: has 138gb. I have 2 74 gig raptors in raid 0. Is it normal for windows to recognize that much space? cause i thought the space was cut in half?

Oh, boy. It could be because you have 2 drives marked as active.

Try deleting the bootsect.bak file.

If that doesn't help, run the DVD and get a command prompt. Try:

Bootrec /RebuildBcd

Confirm the correct path to your installation.

If it doesn't find any installations, then remove the BCD and rebuild it.

Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

It did not find any installations. I did Bcdedit /export c:/bcdbackup and it was successful. However, when i entered ren(space)c:\boot\bcd(space)bcd.old it said "The syntax of the command is incorrect"

Huh. It looks right the way you have it. Maybe it's being a stickler and you need "BCD". But you could still continue to see what happens.

Can you boot to Vista at all now? You could also try these tools from Vista:

VistabootPro or EasyBCD

well i can still only boot with the vista disk in the dvd drive. I deleted BOOTSECT.BAK from the d: drive, like you said. but now there is a bcdbackup file on it.

It sounds like something thinks that drive is C:.

I guess if it were me, I'd start over while still early in the process. What kind of RAID were you shooting for, and more importantly, why? You may just be setting yourself up for problems later if you make your setup more complex than it needs to be.
